Mock drafts are fun to read and to speculate and pick our favorites although rarely do they represent what Dallas is looking for in terms of BPA or need. So going to try to make a bit of sense of it.
First, we need to look at what type of offense and defense the coaching staff is going to run. From the bit we know, the offense is more of a zone blocking scheme, run first, pass action pass and not much of trying to hit a homerun on each play. Could be wrong but based on what we have and who we signed, it appears we want to physically wear down the opposing defense.
Defense appears a more speed defense and the DL are usually like a DeMarcus Lawrence size but LBs are quick, fast, good tacklers using the DTs force runs inside so LB can stop them. Secondary is more of a Tampa 2/Tampa 3 type.
So based on what the fans think and what the media believes are are top needs, they are WR, RB, CB, DT, LB, and Edge. IF so they what do we have at the other positions that make them lesser needs:
QB - Prescott, Milton, Grier - not bad although we shouldn't be surprised to see them draft a QB on Day 3
TE - Ferguson, Schoonmaker, Spann-Ford, Fant, Stephens - not a need but if a good one falls to Day 3 worth a shot
OT - Guyton, Steele, Richards, Waletzko, Bostick, Shepley, Thomas - not a good draft for LT but RT all the way through
OG - Smith, Jones, Charles, Bass, Anderson, Adeniji - could see us adding someone, again Day 3
DE - Parsons, Williams, Turner, Kneeland, Fowler, Brown, Wheat, Thomas (DT/DE) - if one falls to us??
S - Bell, Hooker, Thomas, Wilson, Mukuamu - will not surprise to see one Day 3
Our 30 visits, Dallas Day visits and combine/senior bowl/other visits really focus on three areas. First was Running Back, Defense Tackle then Cornerback along with Wide Receiver were the most visited players with RB far greater than the others. Yes, we did sign 2 guys that could be place holders in Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, with Vaughan and Davis and Luepke still currently on the roster.
I know most fans have WR as the top need but is a #2 WR the top need. We have Lamb then Tolbert, then Turpin would is the speed/return guy along with Parris Campbell who isn't a slouch by any means. Then Mingo who they gave up a 4th for last year and by the way, supposedly at Schottenheimer insistence. Then Brooks, Flournoy, and a few others round out the current roster. Not saying it isn't important to draft one, just not so sure it is the first or second pick.
DT seems like a high priority in run support and Osa is really our only true DT3 guy then are we believing Mazi or Rodgers are going to really be the DT1 guys. Hoping Mazi is going to be but think Dan may have ruined him by making him lose so much weight but appears he has it back and is stronger for more than when he was a rookie.
Linebacker is important although we signed the guys abet short term that the coaches wanted for their system in Murray and Sanborn. And Clark, Liufau, Overshown are all quite capable and will be available this season, so we will draft one just don't see it early unless we trade down for extra picks.
Lastly Cornerback, we have Booth, Butler, Carson, Diggs, Elam, Goodwin, and Pride with Diggs probably starting the season on the PUP list. Not saying we won't add one, and hope we do, just maybe only if one falls into our laps.
I guess for me, it seems like we will definitely double dip at RB and DT and also take a WR that can be more of an X WR than a slot WR or one that has the talent to do both easily. As for as one with speed, could see that guy Day 3. Just not really over the moon on Golden or TMAC, but would take TMAC over Golden.
So who will we take at #12 or will we trade down, still a mystery although it appears there is going to be a lot of movement in the 1st round with a few teams. SF 49ers are looking to move up for either at DT (Graham) or OL (Membou), Patroits could easily take a guy like TE Warren for a weapon for Maye if not a OL guy or if Hunter should fall to them trade down. Will Jags go with DL or a weapon to help Lawrence or protect him? Will Carolina give Young some weapons to help him be successful or fix the D? Las Vegas seems like a lock for Jeanty mainly because that is the coach's MO. Will Cleveland pass on Sanders and go DL or Travis Hunter, same question for Giants. New Orleans could go a few ways but if they pass on Sanders if there or Dart then they are definitely tanking on the season already. Chicago has to protect the franchise QB somehow, someway. And the Jets, who knows especially when they believe Justin Fields is the answer at QB but OL is a must, must need. A couple of guys if not more are going to fall out of those deemed worthy of the top ten and most likely there will be several teams that will be wanting to move up to grab one of them so I believe there will be the opportunity for Dallas to move down if they want and maybe more than once.
My best guess is they move down and take Hampton and if not there then Judkins in the 2nd. I know fans worry that Denver wants Hampton but they have visited multiple times with K. Johnson RB Iowa so see them going for him instead. Guess if I have a wish list mock, it would be a couple of trade downs that netted an extra 2nd, 3rd and a 4th. Say one to Chargers for a 2nd and 4th then on with Rams for a 3rd. And my hope/guess/wish/prayer would be to turn them into Hampton RB, Egbuka WR, Revel CB, Collins DT, Ivey DE/Edge, and Grant LT/RG.
