League sources last night indicated Patriots coach Bill Belichick has long been enamored with Raiders wide receiver Randy Moss and would welcome the opportunity to bring him to Foxboro for the right price. Moss is on the block after two disappointing seasons in Oakland. The Raiders have worked on a deal that would send the mercurial wide receiver to Green Bay, with the Packers offering quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Raiders holding out for a first-round pick, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The Packers don’t seem in much of a rush to pull the trigger, however, which has left an opening for the Pats. A source said Belichick believes he could motivate Moss to play and that he’d have the locker room support system to back him up, thanks to high-character veterans like Tom Brady, Richard Seymour and Rodney Harrison, among others. ... Word out of Oakland is the 30-year-old wants to play on a contender before his career ends. The Raiders are intent on moving him following a miserable 2006 that saw him post career-worst numbers in receptions (42), yards (553), and touchdowns (three).

The Dolphins have maintained a serious level of interest in former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter, but the free agent has yet to decide where he will play next season. With multiple teams still in the mix, the Dolphins appear to be among the main contenders for one of free agency's remaining top-tier players. Porter might still make a visit to the Dolphins' facility. Porter's agent, Jeff Sperbeck, said Sunday they expected to make a decision today whether such a trip would be necessary.

Over the past few days, sources said Dre Bly has expressed concern with remaining a Bronco with several of his new teammates, as well as former ones in Detroit. Bly and agent Kennard McGuire, both reached on their cellphones, declined comment. Shawn Springs has told friends about his long-held desire to play for Denver Coach Mike Shanahan -- they became close many years ago after flying to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl together -- and Shanahan remains a strong proponent of Springs's play, according to a source. The Commanders and Broncos have completed trades in each of the past three years. Should the Broncos reach a point where they considered dealing Bly, the Commanders could be the right partner.

The Packers are most likely to look at hard-cutting backs such as Tennessee's Travis Henry and Chris Brown, New England's Corey Dillon and possibly Oakland's Lamont Jordan if he is released. The Packers also have Noah Herron and 2006 rookie free agent Arliss Beach on the roster. Of the group, Henry is the one who would most fit what the Packers are looking for. However, he is also being heavily pursued by the Broncos. The Packers have $21 million in salary cap room.

Claiming that the rights to a retired player cannot be traded, the NFLPA is expected to file a grievance against the trade that brought Jake Plummer from the Broncos to the Bucs early Saturday. The time the trade was finalized is critical to the matter. If it was finalized after Plummer filed his retirement papers, which reportedly was Friday, then the deal could be voided. Even more critical, however, might be the roughly $5 million in prorated bonus money Plummer will have to pay back should his retirement, which he officially announced on his Web site Saturday night, stick. If the deal goes through, there is a chance the Bucs will be in line for that $5 million payback. If it does not go through, the Broncos likely would be owed the money. Also important are the rights to Plummer. Though he has announced his retirement, he could unretire at any point. The team holding his rights could then trade them. There has been talk of the Bucs possibly trying to talk Plummer out of retirement in an effort to trade his rights to either the Raiders or the Texans.

An increasing friction exists on both sides between the Commanders and Shawn Springs. According to sources, Springs, 31, believes the combination of his age, his future salary cap numbers and the club's reservations about his durability make it unlikely they would try to retain him beyond 2007, and he wants a resolution. Springs said he would play for the full worth of his contract this season, but not for a restructured deal that would result in him making less. He is open to a trade and is mulling over a tactic used by former Commanders linebacker LaVar Arrington last year, when he forfeited deferred payments to opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent. ... League sources said the Commanders entertained options for trading Springs either to Detroit and Denver, adding to his growing belief -- despite protestations from Gibbs -- that he has no long-term future with the team.

The Patriots’ pursuit of Wes Welker hinges on an ugly phrase that’s quickly becoming ubiquitous in the NFL - “poison pill.” It’s a contract clause that makes it virtually impossible for a team, in this case, the Miami Dolphins, to match an offer to one of its restricted free agents. Welker was en route to Foxboro yesterday to meet with the Pats, who are reportedly prepared to offer him a seven-year, $38.5 million deal. It’s unclear whether they’ve chosen to include a poison pill, but it makes sense that they would, since it remains within the rules. ... Once Welker signs his offer sheet with the Pats, the Dolphins will have seven days to match or take the Patriots’ second-round pick (No. 60 overall). The Pats could include a provision guaranteeing the deal if Welker plays five games in Miami. They could also backload it with enough money that he’ll never technically see as a Patriot that would nonetheless make it prohibitively expensive for the Dolphins to match.

Travis Henry spent the night in Denver, said his agent, Hadley Engelhard. The Broncos are expected to try to get the deal done before Henry leaves. Oakland, Green Bay and the New York Giants and Jets also are interested in Henry, who has 5,395 yards rushing.

The Giants may try to arrange for a visit by Travis Henry, who was recently cut by the Titans for financial reasons. Henry will first make a trip to see the Broncos, and he might not get out of Denver without a signed contract. If he remains free, the Giants could be next in line. "They have interest," Henry's agent, Hadley Engelhard, said in an e-mail. "We will follow up with the Giants after his visit to Denver."

The Eagles did not host any players in the first weekend of free agency. Published reports linked them - and a number of other teams - to two New England Patriots free agents, running back Corey Dillon and linebacker Tully Banta-Cain. It seems unlikely that Dillon would want to come to Philadelphia for what is basically a job backing up Brian Westbrook. Banta-Cain, who reportedly visited the Rams over the weekend, might be a good fit as a situational linebacker.

The Dolphins could choose to spend their money elsewhere, with an offer to Cincinnati wide receiver Kelley Washington likely on the way as early as today, a source said. While New England courted Welker, Miami hosted Washington on a free-agency visit Saturday and liked what it saw, the source said. A hamstring injury hindered the 6-foot-3, 218-pound Washington last season. But he is healthy and could be poised to fulfill the tremendous potential he showed at the University of Tennessee. The Bengals drafted him in the third round in 2003.

The Vikings weren't the only team with a big delegation -- including owner Zygi Wilf -- at the workout of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn in South Bend, Ind., on Sunday. The Browns had an equally large group there, including their owner. The Browns draft third, four spots ahead of the Vikings. Houston, which drafts eighth, has talked to teams about moving up so it can draft Quinn, who did a good job of selling himself on Sunday.

DE Kevin Carter, released by the Dolphins on Friday, is scheduled to visit today as the Bucs attempt to beef up a lackluster pass rush. "If the coaching staff and management like what they see and we can get a deal done, then I see no reason for him to take any other visits," Carter's agent, Harold Lewis, said. "They're one of the teams he's fascinated by the chance to play for." One factor in the Bucs' favor is Carter, 33, a former Gator standout and native Floridian, would like to remain in the state. Other interested teams include the Broncos and Titans, though no visits have been scheduled.

If the Broncos don't get Travis Henry, they could continue to talk to Buffalo about a trade for Willis McGahee or pursue Chicago's Thomas Jones. The team has also talked to Philadelphia backup Correll Buckhalter. Jamal Lewis, a former Baltimore star, also is a possibility. But Henry appears to be Denver's top choice.

The Bucs continue to search for offensive linemen. They have met with and begun negotiations aimed at signing Giants free agent Luke Petitgout, but other teams are courting the left tackle. The Commanders are said to be interested in Petitgout, who missed the second half of the 2006 season because of a broken leg. He can play either left tackle or guard. The Bucs also have expressed interest in Cowboys free-agent center Al Johnson, 49ers free-agent center Jeremy Newberry, Vikings free-agent linebacker Napoleon Harris and Falcons free-agent fullback Justin Griffith.

Kerney is discussing deals with Denver and Seattle and might decide today.

Free-agent receiver Kevin Curtis spent part of the afternoon in contract discussions with Detroit, but no agreement had been reached Sunday night. As a precaution, the Lions reportedly were planning to bring in St. Louis receiver Shaun McDonald today. Curtis visited Winter Park but left Saturday without signing a contract, generating speculation he preferred to play for Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz, his former coach in St. Louis.

The Lions offense hasn't been forgotten. Wide receiver Kevin Curtis of the Rams arrived late Saturday. There will be stiff competition from Minnesota, where Curtis visited first. The Vikings are looking for a starter. Roy Williams and Mike Furrey are ahead of Curtis on the Lions depth chart. Running back T.J. Duckett, a former first-round draft pick of the Falcons from Michigan State, also was in line to visit the Lions.

It doesn't look as if Packers tight end David Martin will return, either. Seattle is not San Diego, and in the case of Kris Dielman, the difference was much greater than just the geographical distance between them. The rain-vs.-sun dichotomy was re-emphasized over the weekend when the free-agent guard left Seattle in the middle of his soggy visit with the Seahawks and returned to San Diego after agreeing to re-sign with the Chargers. The Saturday-morning conversation with his agent, Mike McCartney, came with this statement that is destined for free-agent infamy: "I told him, 'Get me out of here, man. Get me home, back to sunny San Diego.' " Returning to the Chargers is what Dielman had wanted, and the Seahawks' interest definitely helped. It's not the first time the Seahawks have been used in free agency, and it won't be the last.

The NFL draft isn't for seven weeks, but here's a projection that makes sense: The Vikings will choose safety LaRon Landry from Louisiana State with their first-round pick (No. 7 overall). That's assuming defensive end Gaines Adams of Clemson is picked before No. 7, and that's a safe assumption. Landry is big (6 feet 1, 213 pounds), fast (4.35 seconds in the 40-yard dash), comes from a major program, safety is a critical position in the Tampa 2 cover defense, and Vikings safety Darren Sharper turns 32 this year.

I'll be surprised if Drew Bledsoe plays in another NFL game unless he agrees to sign as a backup quarterback. If he were a baseball player, he'd be a Hall of Famer on the strength of his passing stats. He ranks fifth in the NFL in all-time pass attempts and completions, and seventh in yards passing. But he's a football player and he probably won't make the Hall of Fame because he ranks only 12th in TD passes, threw 206 interceptions, was sacked 467 times, had a modest 57.2 completion percentage and 77.1 passer rating and a 98-95 record on generally decent teams. It will be interesting to see how he fares when he becomes eligible for Canton.
