EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – A Connecticut man has called 911 to complain that a deli fouled up his sandwich order.

The man can be heard on a recording of Wednesday's call complaining that he "specifically asked for little turkey and little ham, a lot of cheese and a lot of mayonnaise," and the Grateful Deli in East Hartford got it wrong.

The dispatcher asked the man to verify that he was calling 911 because he didn't like the way they made his sandwich. The man replied, "Exactly."

The dispatcher advised him not to buy it.

If he does it again, there are legal repurcussions for this type of stupidity.

You would be amazed how many people attribute 911 to being the number for the police. That's why you see so many strange 911 calls like this. People want to call and complain to the police so they dial 911 thinking they are talking to the police.

Local governments could probably save a lot of money if they would run advertising campaigns telling the citizens to only call 911 in emergencies, not as a speed dial for the police.

I agree. Early on when 911 was put in place they had many public service announcements about the use of 911. Seldom see those announcements any more. I can only think of 2 times I have had to use 911 both were request to send paramedics.

He should be prosecuted for misuse of emergency services.

True. It's probably cheaper than an advertising campaign as it makes the news and it will be just as effective.

The problem with this that people will hesitate calling 911 for emergencies because they are not sure if it's an emergency. If they hear about someone being prosecuted for calling 911 for a non-emergency, they may hold off calling and in many cases, minutes can be the difference between life and death.

An educational and informative advertising campaign would be more effective because it could explain when to call and more importantly, give examples. It could also spread the word that fines will be issued for obvious non-emergencies such as incorrect food orders.

I agree but there also should be consequences for those who misuse 911. I'm all in favor of informing people of the proper usage of 911 as well as informing them that there are consequences for misuse. Come on a sandwich and this guy can't figure out this is not an emergency?

You wouldn't believe some of the calls we get at our FD. One day, I took a call from an old lady asking us to come clean out her freezer. I asked her if she realized she called the fire department and she said yes!

I just handed it to my partner and said this one is for you :laugh2:

Know what would be an effective commercial? A parody of the morons calling in to complain about their fast food orders.

"Don't be one of these dip****s, 911 is for Emergencies. Thank You."

Well, that sounds like stretching the safety net a bit too far.
If someone doesn't know the difference between life and death, the commission of a theft or fire and a screwed up customer order or the like, I personally don't think we can afford to dumb down our society anymore by compensating for them.

I'm not opposed to an ad campaign, but I am for prosecuting these fools.

I would agree that if this the guy would call 911 over a mixed up sandwich order I would doubt that a public service spot is going to make a difference for him. :laugh2:

I agree. No amount of advertising can fix stupid. It would be a waste of money.
