Bountiful, Utah – A man who found more than $40,000 cash in the Utah home he recently bought has returned the money to its rightful owner, The Salt Lake City Tribune reported Thursday.

Josh Ferrin discovered the money stuffed in eight ammo boxes in the attic while he was exploring a workshop room in the Bountiful home on Tuesday.

"I opened it up, freaked out. Closed it, locked it in my truck and called my wife," Ferrin said of the surprise.

At the time he thought of his car troubles, repairs and renovations for the house and his desire to adopt a child -- but he returned it to the owner.

"I couldn't let myself consider the money mine," he said.

All is not lost in this world....until tomorrow!

It refreshes by belief in people. We get bombarded by all the bad people do but it is stories like this that lifts my spirit in man

This might not be popular, but IMO the money was his to keep. He legally bought the house, and anything left in it after closing should have been his.

On top of that, who is stupid enought to "forget" about $40K in the attic?

Legally I believe you are right. Had he choose to keep it he would have been in his right to do so. Morally he could not do it and sometimes that is more important to a person

Not a question of legal or not...since he found it and took it to the previous owner without any legal avenues trying to get him to do it.

On a side note...did the original owners give him a portion of it as a reward for his actions?

The man died. Obviously, his kids didn't know about that rainy day fund he had stashed up there. The money was returned to his children.

He should have asked them if they knew anything about the ammo boxes in the attic.

If not, MAKE IT RAIN!!!!!!

They probably didn't even know. Kind of hard for me to believe that someone can forget about the 40K upstairs.

That makes a lot more sense. I originally only read the snippet posted by the thread starter, and it didn't mention that the previous owner died. After going back and clicking on the link I saw where the original owner died and it was his kids who sold the house.

This at least makes me feel better that someone wouldn't just "forget" about $40K. He had a reason for leaving it behind.:

Exactly...This wouldn't have even been a story if it were me.

He did the right thing.

Just for the sake of a good conversation......

What if you bought a house and found treasure buried in the backyard that was hidden there 100-200 years ago. Do you try to find the owner's relatives, or do you keep the treasure for yourself?

No, but I would dig him up and pour the gold in the box with him. ;)

I think that is a bit different, heck I can't trace my own family back over 100 years.

Are those Gold Ballons you talking about, like pirates had. :laugh2:

Good for him - I would have given most of it back too, mostly.
