Ok sarge, giving the kids the ammo box back is not the same. :laugh1:

It's not the thought that counts?

I think that is a bit different, heck I can't trace my own family back over 100 years.

Okay....

Let's say there is a note inside saying that it belonged to George Washington. It shouldn't be hard to find George's great x 8 grandson. Would you take the treasure to him or sell it to the highest bidder?

George Washington didn't have any kids of his own. He did have two step-children. Since they are step-children, they only get half and I get the other half. :p:

I would contact a curator at the national museum since something like that would be of value to the nation’s history. Yes I would get money out of it but again it is different than a man passing away with living children and keeping what is rightfully theirs.

I would not condemn a person who found money and choose to keep it but I do have respect for people with high morals who do things not because the law says they can or can't but because they do what they know is right in their heart.

How do you forget you have $40000 lying around?

Apparently the guy who hid it died, and his kids sold the house. They didn't know that it was up in the attic.

Just for the sake of a good conversation......

What if you bought a house and found treasure buried in the backyard that was hidden there 100-200 years ago. Do you try to find the owner's relatives, or do you keep the treasure for yourself?

C'mon man...not the same.

I would've expected that from you. The guy came from an era that believed the only way to protect your money was to keep it yourself and not in a bank. He didn't need the money and stashed it away for his kids but died before he had a chance to give it too them. It's not your money. It belongs to the kids whose father just died. What an immoral person you are.

Here's a flip.

If someone bought a house and it was discovered after the purchase that the house had some serious damages that were missed in the inspection and needed 40K in repairs, would you expect the selling family to come back and give the buyers that money?

I probably would not have given it back especially knowing the owner has passed. I would have convinced myself the good man upstairs meant for me to find that 40k and keep it to myself. Yep. Yep. :)

They would have won it anyway. Property rights allow original owner to claim their property considered "lost" - GENERALLY SPEAKING. I am not familiar with Utah law.
