Archie Manning was a high quality QB who didn't have a chance because he played on horrible Saints teams.

The NFL was different then. No free agency, no salary cap, a draft that went well beyond 7 rounds. With bad management and poor drafting, it was possible to build truly horrible teams. Manning was on one of those. That's just the way it was. Manning didn't have a chance. And it wasn't his fault. Joe Montana and Tom Brady would have failed there too.

M. Vick is the only QB who I can think of who might have had a chance with the Saints of the 1970's. Vick may have been able to outrun the old school defenses to victory. But chances are that he'd have gotten himself killed under the old school rules.

I'll give you that Peyton is a great qb. But until any of them win big, the only common genes I see in that family is chokeaholism.

NFL royalty? Hearing that makes me want to :puke:

For those that are not old enough to remember the 70's- there were two teams that for several years defined PUTRID. Houston Oilers and NO Saints. The Saints kept losing but the Oilers got Bum Phillips and became contenders.
The Bears were pretty bad from the late 60's until a couple years after payton came in. As was pointed out, there was no FA, few trades, and the draft was 17 rds for most of that time, I believe. UDFA were truly bad mostly- Drew Pearson was an absolute unique find.
No QB without good receivers or good O line is going to be worth a damn. the Saints had pretty much neither for the whole time Archie was there. Benson never has gotten any better at being an owner, and they really only had the late 80's as a time that they were good. And maybe now- we shall see.
whatever he has done since, Archie played his heart out for 11 seasons in the worst pit in the NFL. Had he gone to any other franchise, he could very well have ended up in the HOF.

The Giants were awful for years, and even when
Bill made them good,i'll always remember Simms always
losing to the Cowboys and just his frustration at losing
to Dallas.
