Marc Colombo

There is no reason to think that his broken leg will leave any permanent impact. He should be fine. He had the one devastating injury that the Bears fourtunately for us chose not to give him enough time to recover. BP took a chance on him and we got lucky. He had played 2 1/2 seasons without injury so to call him injury prone is pretty stupid. Yes he is getting older but should still have 3-4 good years left.
.

God I hope not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Free start the Philly playoff game at RT? Perhaps that was the reason that nobody noticed him. Colombo should not have been playing in the Minny game and i'm sure he would have been pulled for Free had Flo not got hurt.

another guy I'd like to talk about on the o-line is Andre Gurode. while Physically one of the most talented centers in the league imo he is also one of the dumbest imo. that is not based off of just those terrible shotgun snaps either.

Gurode is not dumb. In fact, he's pretty sharp. Did well academically, earned his degree and I believe honors for his academic performance (among other athletes).

He can't make line calls. That's the issue.

Does anyone know if there are other centers in the league who don't make the calls?

I don't think it's he can't make line calls, i think he just makes mistakes when calling out blitzes and picking up with Def is trying to do. Maybe he'll get better at it? I think he did ok last year....

I like Columbo--especially after he shoved Jacobs who was mouthing off after the Giants beat us last year--I loved it when Jacobs turned around to challenge Columbo and could do nothing but act angry as Columbo glared at him

No, Colombo started the playoff game against Philadelphia.

Gotcha, to be fair to Colombo our oline as a whole was trampled against Minny. We walked right into a powder keg feeling good about ourselves after winning our first playoff game in 13 years. They were ready for us and we didn't capitalize on scoring chances early in the game. Then it just out out of hand.

You sure he made the calls last year? I am pretty sure it was Kosier making them ... Also, Gurode has been in the league 8 years. If he was going to improve on that aspect of his game, he would have done so already.

That DL does that to tons of teams - factor in the crowd noise etc. and we were screwed. Had we jumped on them early and shut the fans the **** up we would have seen something different.

I have heard talk that Kosier helps out with line calls but not sure if that is the usual internet BS or actually came from a source on the team.

I've heard them say Kosier helps him make the calls. I don't think he takes the job away fully. Kosier was also out for a season a year ago. (by the way)I think Kosier would make a heck of a center and I'm surprised he was never worked at that position.

Romo has the ability to avoid the edge rushers IF the middle of the line can hold up their end of the bargain. They did not in the MInnesota game and they should have been the least effected by crowd noise. G,C,G did not play well in that game at all. Free was at a new position, and Columbo was on a bum leg.

Davis, Gurode and Kosier - I think that is where the emphasis needs to be put. Davis whiffs way too much - he needs to lose some weight. Gurode -I am pretty sure Kosier makes the line calls. Kosier - can be pushed around. Columbo is fine healthy and we will see if Free can be better than average - nobody knows until he hits the field at LT next year.

Kosier may HELP with the line calls but that is all. remember Gurode had knee surgery after the season so he was not 100% physically either.

Do you realize it was a broken leg and that he came back to soon? A healthy Colombo > Free...

Maybe not. Free was quite impressive when he filled in for Colombo. Colombo was deemed to be ready to play when he came back, but there were many who wished he had stayed on the bench.

at the end of the day BOTH of our OTs are above average...and against good teams the HIGHEST paid offensiver coordinator in the history of the NFL is going to have to earn his money by figuring out a way to manufacture points. You cannot have steak at every position. Elite OTs do NOT grow on trees. Do you want to be bad enough to get the opportunity to draft in the top 10? Like I said in another post...the Steelers won a SB 2 years ago with an OL far worse than ours. So it can be done....it will just take a total team effort.

Steelers should have an * next to every win due to official special treatment.

See this is what I don't understand. Yes, ok I get that Free has bought himself all of this team and most of these zoners confidence.

But Columbo was already athletically limited with his knees prior to this broken leg.

I always liked Columbo's fire and I do believe he turned out to be a player for us the pastseveral seasons.

However, can you imagine what another 16 regular season games plus what the playoffs would do to this guy?

Like lets be realistic here. We have Free taking on a huge challenge himself and Columbo is breaking down.

Say what you want, but that's life in the NFL and if this team wants to rely on McQ, Brewster and some "vet free agent" with game experience to protect our QB and drive our running game to a superbowl they are delusional.

Heck even if Columbo was 100 percent and Free was 2 years in as a left tackle you need that bonafide guy to step in.

I dont care what Pittsburgh did 2 years ago with that hunk a junk line and I know Jerry thinks BIGG is a contingency at LT if need be but we're playing with fire.

We didn't offer a pick for Gaither, but us and the Bills did check in aboiut him and that means we are looking at tackles.

I find it hard to believe we are going to just sit back. Even Flo should remain a possibility still.

Broken legs heal a lot easier then cartilage and ligaments. Chill man.

This is a "what have you done for me lately" league. Fact is Colombo is in his 30s, and has had injury problems his entire career. This fact alone should atleast cause Dallas to bring in some serious competition. He isn't going to get any better and is only going to regress from here on out. I'm fairly confident in Free and don't really think he should be the main concern. The coaches are extremely confident in him, and based on their recent track record they've been pretty spot on as far as who deserves to play and who doesn't. I also agree with the poster who brought up Gurode. Really wish we had been able to draft Max Unger in the 09 draft. A versatile young guy like that could really help out our rotation at center and guard.

it's a what have you done for me lately world for the most part, driven by the insane IGS. so you rephrase how you feel into a generic term and cute quote.

i didn't believe it before, and i don't know.

i remember when we had bledsoe i cried all over wanting the line addressed. i also think we *do* need to look at the line.

but given all those things does NOT equal beating up colombo cause he coaches put him in before he was really ready to go.

in this desire to have something done for you NOW - you miss how it got there and the real value of what they can do cause they didn't do it NOW.
