No one really talking about Dak's contract right now but trust me, it's coming real soon. His $49M 2023 cap hit is the straw stirring pot. His contract will not have any more guaranteed money after the 2023 season. The impact has backed Jerry and Stephen into a corner with only 2 options.....
- Option No. 1.... Admit they are/have lost confidence in Dak by NOT doing anything but eating the $49M cap hit, leaving their options open to release or trade Dak after the season. Yes, he has a no-trade clause which gives him a bit of leverage on who/where he's traded. BTW, nothing to stop them from doing the 2nd option ( extend and/or restructure) AFTER the 2023 season if Daks lead the team to let's say NFCCG and/or Super Bowl.
- Option No. 2....This one is really simple, restructure/extend the current contract to lower the impact of the 2023 cap hit. But this would close the trade/release options after the 2023 season. In fact, it would more than likely add more guaranteed years/money ( probably 3-4 ). The bottom line, this would basically guarantee Daks is on the team next few years. To be honest, this was the plan when the initial contract was signed. Aikman and Romo's contracts were structured the same way.
Fish does a good job explaining..........
