Good article, talks about the Collins and what he and Lett saw in him. Touches on how many 1 on 1 rushes Dlaw had and how he needs more out of him.

Rod Marinelli 'elated' about Ezekiel Elliott pick; explains how he'll use DT Maliek Collins

The Dallas Morning News

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli bundles up against a cold drizzle before an NFL football game against the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, in Orchard Park, N.Y. (Smiley N. Pool/The Dallas Morning News)

Had the Cowboys traded their second- and third-round picks to Seattle and drafted Paxton Lynch, they wouldn't have had the opportunity to draft Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith and Nebraska defensive tackle Maliek Collins.

You probably have some knowledge of Smith, considering he was one of the top college football players in the country.

But what about Collins?

The 6-2, 311-pound tackle had eight sacks, 19 quarterback hurries and 23 tackles for loss over the previous three seasons.

NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah called Collins a "nice piece of clay" and a "fun project" for Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli.

Marinelli seems to feel good about Collins' chances of being in his eight-man defensive line rotation.

The point about Hardy freeing up DLaw for 1 on 1 rushes is critical. Ty Crawford cannot provide that for DLaw, so betting on a rook like Collins to do so is pie in the sky. Cowboys need a stud DL who is proven double digit sack guy.

Cowboys need to trade for Muhammad Wilkerson stat. Not only is he already one of the best interior pass rushers in the league, he is still young (26) and his game is still improving. A RKG too, Garrett would love his work ethic and leadership.

Crawford can command double teams. If not, then Gregory needs to beat single coverage or we have to blitz Lee or a DB to get pressure.

Opposing offenses do not game plan for Ty Crawford. Crawford also had his best season with Hardy on the team.

I don't know about game plan, but they'll double him with Hardy out of the lineup.

His best year was 2014, when he took the job from Melton in my book. His injury last year hampered him a bit.

Crawford's most productive year was 2015. Even with an injured wing, he was able to put up more sacks and tackles than previous career best season and similar to DLaw, this was due to Hardy's presence.

I think Thornton is going to help in that area a bit too. The guy may not be a phenomenal pass rusher but he eats blockers and double teams for breakfast.

The dynamics of this year's line are interesting, if nothing else.

Hope you are right about Thornton, I am a Cowboys fan afterall. But Cowboys are going to have to invest SOME resources on D if their goal is to WIN a ring. Low level signings and wishes have not worked in the past. The young D talent has to take several steps up too.

The bolded part is the most critical (especially for this team). With all the money tied up in QB, WR, OL on this team the ONLY way we are going to compete is if some of these young pups start tearing into throats like big dogs. It's the same with every good team. Their big money is tied up somewhere. For the most part it's the lower paid guys that glue it all together.

Seattle was that way when Russell was on his rookie deal. They didn't have much invested at the QB spot so they spent like gang busters on D. Now that Russell got paid some of those big signings will be exiting stage left over the next couple of years and younger guys will have to step up.

Seattle has a very sound plan and great coaching. I'm more of a fan of Denver's plan, which can be effected without great coaching because the dollars are spread out on both sides of the ball. In fact, when Elway started focusing more resources on D, the team didn't just contend they won a ring, in dominant fashion even.

Yes, these young players need to go to work, step up and for a few, stop doing drugs or taking banned substances.

Thorton is going to make a difference in my view, Crawford should be better if his shoulder is fine but as you say, we will need to add something to this line going forward.

This was interesting about Irvin:

"I like him. You know the key measurable with him? His ability to bend is off the charts. I usually don't like tall guys because they can't bend. This guy bends. He bends like Big Cat [Leon Lett]. Big Cat is tall, but he bends. Watch a guy get in his stance, that tells you everything. I'm going to look at [Irving] at left end also."

Loved his thoughts on Zeke:

"I'm elated because I think you always look at the big picture. ... We don't play fantasy football. It's not that. A one-yard, two-yard run there's fight and physicalness. That's good for your team. It develops toughness. We have to go against that offense every day. We play our offense more than anybody. It develops a hardness to your defense. You've got to play against a great line, a great back, now you've got to match up on an All-Pro receiver, great quarterback. ... It's the physical nature of the game, which at times is being lost in today's football. The physical nature of the game, I believe in that. This young man and the other backs are going to bring that."
