Mario Manningham
War Room analysis
Hands: Reaches out and plucks the ball out of the air. Shows the concentration and toughness to catch passes in traffic, absorb hits and hold on to balls. Makes tough catches with defenders on his back. Shows the hands, coordination, body control and concentration to adjust to off-target passes. Grade: 8.5
Patterns: Runs excellent routes to consistently separate against man-to-man coverage. Closes cushion on cornerbacks quickly, and turns them around often. Consistently bursts out of cuts to separate. Sells in-route fakes well, especially double-moves. Grade: 8.5
Run after catch: Is a surprisingly aggressive runner, turning downfield immediately and attacking defenders if there is no open field to which to run. Shows good instincts and vision to find running room and make quick cuts. Lacks the size to break tackles but has enough strength, balance and agility to run through arm tackles. Grade: 7.5
Release: Against "off" and zone coverage, accelerates to full speed in a blink to close cushion on cornerbacks. Against press coverage, shows the quickness and agility to avoid some jams but isn't a big receiver capable of powering through jams. Uses hands well to escape jams but is slowed a bit at the snap. Grade: 7.5
Blocking: Works hard. Lacks bulk and strength to dominate defensive backs and sometimes gets pushed around but mostly is able to compensate with hustle. Grade: 7.5
Bottom line: Manningham, a early-entry junior, is the better of the two Michigan receivers (Adrian Arrington) in the '08 draft class. Manningham is one of the draft's most polished receivers and should contribute early in his pro career. There's a tendency to downgrade thin, slight receivers, but the more you see of Manningham, the more you become convinced he will be a good NFL starter.
