Horrible news: Miami Marlins ace starting pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boat crash off of Miami Beach late last night.

No details have been released yet, apart from the fact that Fernandez was one of three people killed. The Marlins have issued a statement confirming Fernandez’s death, stating that the organization is devastated and that their thoughts and prayers were with Fernandez’s family. Today’s Marlins game against the Braves has been canceled.

Horrible and sad news.

The article I read said the boat had a major impact with a jetty/dock.

Fernandez was on a 33-foot vessel that had a "severe impact" with a jetty, said Lorenzo Veloz of the Fish Commission. Veloz said the boat was found upside down. Two bodies were found under the vessel and one was found in the water by divers. The boat was traveling full speed and was demolished. Twin 525-hp Mercury Racing engines, top speed 85mph, at night, drunk,.......and then they HIT ROCKS !!!!

Don't know if above is true yet, just the latest info.....

Terrible news.

It really caught me off this AM. Hurts as a Marlins fan too, on a lesser scale. *

RIP Jose

He was a good guy that escaped Cuban oppression and lived the American Dream.

Nothing sadder than to see someone so talented, so driven, and so full of life lose their life in an accident. Somewhat ironic that he risked his life leaving Cuba in a boat, and jumped off the boat to save his mother when she fell out of the boat, and ultimately lost his life in the water in a boat accident. It's a tremendous loss for baseball and the Cuban-American community in south Florida. RIP to a shooting star.

A picture of the boat from the Coast Guard. I also think that they said this was not alcohol related.

The tribute to Fernandez last night was very emotional. Met announcers were crying, Mets were crying-It was extremely moving. I did not care that the Mets lost. It actually seemed appropriate.
