Since my first impressions of what the heck is JJ up to with this pick and the offbeat humor in camp with allegations of difficulty with coaches, attitude and effort, I've gotten very excited about the abilities of Bennett.

I was thinking of how unique he was until watching the 92 Dallas-SF NFCC game the other day. Watching Novachek got me thinking about how similar they were. While Bennett is bigger and faster the two have a pretty similar build and look an awful lot alike on the field.

I hope Jason can find a way to get this kid on the field with Witten esp on third downs and capitalize on his unique talents. It would take a lot of pressure off Witten, Romo, and the OL to have another goto guy on third down and need a big play time.

Am I being nostalgic or is there some common factors here?

With the type of receiving options we have on the field we will be very good in the intermediate passing game. Just think we need a more durable vertical presence than just Austin. RW, Witten and Bennett are some real nice intermediate yardage weapons.

We were all big play motivated last year and now I feel other than that stick of dynamite we have in the backfield (F. Jones, the oldest looking rookie in the league), we might be wondering what a big play up the field will look like.

Like what we have in our 2 RB and 2 TE sets, but not what I see in our 3 WR+ sets.

If utilized properly, this guy will create major problems for most defenses. We have a very big, physical offense. Barber, Witten, Roy, Bennett...
Even Choice is physical. Our O-line is huge. They just need to wear people down in the running game and be mediocre in protection and Romo will destroy defenses. They were awful with the pass blocking and that led to many turnovers, and rushed passes.
I think Bennett, Barber, Williams and Witten should create major matchup problems around the goal line.

I think many here are misled about RWs speed. But I do agree we could use another fast WR at least for the PS. If Austin and/or RW goes down we have no true vertical threat. A backup would be a good thing. I'd love for someone to come along and push Hurd off the team say for a pick. I think we have enough possession WRs. Unless Hurd is going to turn into a Michael Irvin type player.

IMO, that fade route that we ran to Roy in the endzone late in the season, should have been going to Bennett. With his height and basketball background, I assume a jumpball would be right up his alley.

The jump ball is right up Roy Williams's alley too. He was a state champion high jumper.

When I see Martellus Bennett, I see Kellen Winslow Sr. Never have given much thought on the Novecek comparison. I'll have to look again because off the top of my head I'm not seeing it.

I guess I wasn't going to go that far so I'll have to think about Winslow. He's one of my favorite not a Cowboy players.

But if he's in sight of Winslow's play then I'll take that, too. I'm not ready to compare his level of play to anyone yet though. I was just thinking how much he and Novachek move alike.

Just mix it up in goal line..sometimes throw it up to martellus..sometimes throw it up to RW..keep the defense guessing.

I never really considered a Bennett and Novacek comparison but I'm sure glad we traded Fasano and drafted Bennett. This guy is going to be a beast in this league for a long time.

Um, anyway...

My impression is that Winslow had more speed... IMO he was more of the modern-type oversized WR, while Bennett is a "true" TE who's not a liability as a blocker.

In fact, I'm trying to think of a guy as tall and "long" (as they say now in basketball) and naturally strong as Bennett. It looks to me like the only thing he lacks is great speed. There's no telling how good this guy can be after a couple years of weight training. He's only a baby right now.

This and Garrett decides to actually throw more of them. Who cares if they know it's coming, make them stop it.

Exactly. When you have the talent, it doesn't matter if they know it's coming. I thought at the end of the second half of the super bowl, the Cards should have thrown three straight fades to Fitzgerald and kick a field goal if it didn't work. When you got a guy that can go up and get the ball, let him do it, throw it only to where he can get it.

Yeah I guess I'm only looking at the two of them in a receiving capacity. I posted this awhile back LINK

I've high hopes for Bennett myself...the weights should do him well.
