Does anyone think he actually starts taking the game seriously enough to be a key factor this year? The guy can block like no other TE I've ever seen. He is as good as Witten blocking guys.

But what about his whole game? Do you think he can step it up?

Why or why not?

I do think he will put it all together this season. Main reason because he has the talent to do so and wants to have a bigger role on the team.

I would post the video from Hard Knocks when he first got here, but I don't believe I can embed it. From my point of view, they really do a good job of portraying MartyB as a slacker. I don't usually believe hearsay. But when I saw it with my own eyes, I became concerned.

I say he does it next season. He's gotta start thinking about the next contract and will need a good showing.

I think Hardknocks does not tell the whole story. No doubt he is immature he likes having fun. He is also a very talented young man and I do think the cream will rise to the top.

I think Phillips is right on his *** ready to take over the No. 2 TE spot. Phillips actually saw more action late last year than Bennett. If that doesn't motivate Bennett then he may just be a lost cause.

ok, everyone has to set their expectations correctly and realistically. YOu can't look at him and set expectations in isolation. what do you expect Bennet to do this year? lets analyze further before you do.

Dallas Had 550 Attempts and completed 347 (63%). lets say we attempt more passes this year for what ever reason. lets put it around 575 which puts us around 5-10 range in the NFL. at 65% completion range then it would be 373 completions.

We have Austin, Witten, Wiliams, Dez Bryant as primary targets and they get around 80% of the passes (last 5 years the top 3 got about 70% so assuming Dez will get around 10%). so that would be 298. that leaves about 75 catches left for everybody else.

lets see we have bennett, Ogltree, Phillips, Barber, Felix, Crayton (or Hurd).

so everyone wants this offense to explode. they want Dez involved, they want Austin involved, they want witten involved, williams will get his share and there is only one ball to go around.

lets say Ogltree gets around 15 catches? is that good? would that make Ogltree crowd happy? lets say barber, felix will get around 40 catches (since the backs are expected to be more involved in passing game and last year RBs had about 55+ catches)). is that good? that leaves about 20 more catches between phillips, bennett, hurd (assuming crayton isn't here). lets say bennett gets around 5-10 catches, which leave 10-15 catches for bennett. oh wait. isn't that what he got last year. lets examine a little further. couple of years back we had TO, Witten and Crayton as top 3 with a green Austin/hurd as #4 and then we got williams who fizzled.

last year we had Austin, Witten, Williams and Crayton, with williams a little bit better and crayton much better than Austin/hurd a couple of years back. we promptly saw Bennett's catches drop a bit...hmmm interesting.

now we have Austin, Witten, Williams, Dez and people expect dez to be much better than crayton (thus probably crayton is a goner). we want more passes to Felix Jones in space. we also want to see more of Ogltree. so again what do you expect Bennett to do? I say around 15-25 catches is realistic

that's my expectations for Bennett.

Most teams have one good pass catching TE and one good blocking TE. This guy is one of the better blocking TEs in the league but has the athletic skill set to be an elite pass catching TE. For now though, he's mostly being featured as a blocking TE.

The sooner people adjust their expectations to this, the better we'll all be.

He may have the talent, but does he have the smarts? I don't know.

CBFanInDC, I can see your point, especially when it comes to the numbers game.

But if he breaks out as a player all that means is he makes big plays at crucial times. And you could be off in your statistical prediction. He could pull in 30-40 catches. I would consider that a good year for him--one that would have me buying into the MartyB hype. If he keeps blocking for us like he has in the past, we'll be a better team just for his contribution there. So color me already a fan.

He's being used as more of a blocking TE because he wasn't doing the job as a receiver. The team didn't trust him as a receiver, but they still needed blocking in 2 TE sets.

He has clasisc signs of being self-centered, and those types of guys can never put the team before themselves. All the talent in the world won't help (see Randy Moss, Terell Owens, etc.)

What I expect from Bennett is the same thing I expect from all player, when the play comes your way make the play. He may not get as many chances but the chances he gets he has to make the most of. I'll take wins and a championship over the individuals stats any day of the week.

That's just freaking ignorant and ridiculous. He was our best blocking non-offensive linemen even though he was featured less in the passing game as the season went on. He still blocked well all season. There were even a couple of plays were he handled Jared Allen one on one in the Minnesota game when Witten was getting beat like a drum.

What evidence do you have in game play of him being self-centered?

I love Cap N' Crunch....it's my favorite type of lunch. So..I eat a whole bunch.

true. I am not saying he could not catch that many. but its going to come at a price for somebody else. statistically unless we throw over 600 passes just doesn't seem possible. even 600 passes means only 25 extra and that would put us in the top 3 in the league.

so will wittens catches go down from 90+ to 70+? will Austin's catches drop. somebody will catch less.

so if that's the case will people say witten has lost it and what's wrong with him? or will they say Austin was a one year wonder? what if Dez doesn't catch 40 passes, will people go up in arms that Dez was over hyped.

we can't have it all, we can't have Austin, Witten, Dez, WIlliams, Bennett, Ogltree, RBs all catch at ideal levels.

just saying we need to keep that in mind when we do final evaluations.

I am going to look for the stats, he seemed to have recieved the same number of throws but didn't catch as many.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is accurate. On top of that I believe if you look you will find that most of the passes thrown his way were early in the year and that as the year went on they no longer trusted him and his opportunities decreased.

I agree so it will be important for Bennett to go out and earn that trust.
