I've spent some time looking at what this kid has accomplished in his short NFL career and he seems to offer some intriguing potential.

First off he is a former 3rd pick back in 2011.

And guess what? He was the fastest LB at the combine running a blistering 4.49 in the 40. And that's for a guy standing 6'4 and weighing 250lbs.

Now the interesting part...

In the last 3 seasons he's played a total of 488 snaps (about 1/2 season's worth).

And in those 488 snaps he's recorded:

7 QB sacks.
8 QB hits.
20 QB pressures.

For 488 snaps, those totals are respectable.

Just for comparison:

Last season-

George Selvie in 762 snaps had 8 sacks, 11 hits and 32 pressures.
Ware in 648 snaps had 6 sacks, 8 hits and 34 pressures.

Maybe this Wilson kid can provide a little pass rush in place of Lawrence.

Brian Broaddus has spoken highly about this kid's physical capabilities.

It would be awesome if Wilson could step up. Absolutely awesome.

With Lawrence out until about Week 4, we don't really have a pass rushing DE. This is when the young guys step up. Think he could beat out Mincey for the starting job?

He's a freak of nature physically, but he's always been more of an athlete and not a football player. This comes from my vast research googl...errrr "watching film."

I'm just hoping his role in this scheme will be so simple he can better utilize his freakish ability without thinking.

If not beat him out, at least they can rotate. Fresh legs.

I don't know much about him but the Cowboys really need someone to shock the world and generate a pass rush. Otherwise the season could be a groundhog day. Hopefully the free agent scouting department can mind some serviceable gems.

Now this is the kind of info that can soften Lawrence's injury news.

Physically, Wilson is a blue chip player. I think it was @xwalker that listed his measurables a little while back and really, he is just about everything you could want (his physical attributes) in a weakside edge rusher in Marinelli's defense.

Now, the guy just hasn't done it for some reason, so any enthusiasm should be held down some, but he has the tools to do it.

I was thinking a little while before camp about maybe why he hasn't done it and, if memory serves, he was drafted with Gregg Williams as the Saints coordinator. Then we had "Bounty Gate" which slowed down his development and really just killed the entire Saints defense. He had to go through that and then when Ryan came in as coordinator, they switched to a 34 defense and Wilson really struggled with the coverage aspect of playing 34 OLB. IMO, he should be an edge rusher period. See QB, go get QB.

There is a chance that his development has been slowed down because of his circumstances and then the move to a 34 just wasn't a fit so he was let go.

I think that if the guy is going to make it in the NFL, Marinelli's defense is his best chance. He is going to have few responsibilities and will be able to just pin his ears back and use his athleticism to get to the passer.

Even before Lawrence got hurt, I had some hope that things would click for Wilson and he would become a dangerous edge rusher. Now, at least we know he is going to have a lot of chances to do something.

Ben Gardner will save us.

When are we going to come up with a nickname for Ben that can handle his utter awesomeness? I thought of Ben "The Gardener" Gardner, but that's really, really lame.

Well, if he's so good then why ....

Because...and this is the genius of Jerry & Jason....according to some people, the Cowboys are terrible at anything and everything they do...so everyone thinks, well, if the cowboys are interested in him, so he can't be any good, we don't want him....[man. I hope he does good, or this statement may be considered true by some....LOL]

Why? I guess it could be said of Tony Romo for sitting the pine for three seasons as well...strictly on why.

Mike, it sounds like you've personally scouted the player.

Am I fair in saying that?
