Let's say Free doesn't recover from his surgery, or let's just look a couple of years down the road. Who is better suited to play right tackle? Zach Martin or La'el Collins?

Set aside wanting Martin to stay at right guard. The question is who would be better at right tackle?

I will pick Martin, until I have a chance to see how well Collins plays in a NFL game.....or two......or three. Martin is a Pro Bowler and that is a fact.

Play them where they're great. Not where they're good.

It was reported that Collins looked very uncomfortable on the right side in pre-draft workouts. It will take some time to adjust. I don't think Amartin has been a serious consideration at RT. From the day he was drafted, the team has said he was a guard.

Martin is the superior foot athlete, so keeping him at guard would make more sense to me. In a zone blocking scheme, his pulling ability and skill at getting downfield on blocks is huge. Collins is the more powerful player of the two, and would work well at either guard or tackle. In my sig, I have him at RT.

Collins played LG and LT at LSU. He defintely needs to learn the muscle memory to play RT.

You could alternate La'el or Martin at RT and RG a few games and I'd imagine u could make it a habit and own the right side of the field for he next ___ years.....

With the way teams are building from inside out, good interior play trumps OT play more notably RT play. I think you will see that RT will be seriously devalued here in the future, more so than is now.

The interior play is important to shorter quarterbacks such as Romo, Drew Brees and Russell Wilson. Inside push hinders them much more than QBs like Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck.

My hope is that either Chaz Green or Laurence Gibson can be Free's replacement at RT. Let Collins, Frederick, and Martin try to be the best interior OL they can be.

I think Collins ihas little Eric Williams in him. I think he starts at LG this year then moves over to RT next year.

i think the future RT on this team is Chaz Green. Collins is a much better prospect at G. All pro type prospect at G. Green has better footwork, he's made to play RT in this zone blocking scheme Dallas uses. Collins is meant for inside. Collins, Fredrick, and Martin are going to monsters in the middle.

you easily could be right. I hope RB likes to run between tackles because it will be open all day!

I hope our line ends up being Smith - Collins - TFred - Martin - Green, whether that be this year or next. I also think Gibson has a great shot to end up as our swing. We could be set for a while.

Exactly my thoughts.

Both Martin and Collins could be a very good RT but you maximize their ability at G.

Who knows? The Cowboys could blow our minds in next years draft and get another blue chip prospect who figures as a pure G, forcing one of these guys to play RT. I don't think its the plan but they've proven to be open minded at an already stacked position. They were prepared to use their 1st round pick this year on an OL, if you believe Jerry.

Or Gibson.

I don't see any possibility of that happening this season. Gibson has upside but is very raw as a football player. I don't really know why he is so raw because he played quite a few games in college and went to a bigger school. I'm not sure about the coaching that he received. It seems that some college coaches just let the physically superior players play and don't try to coach them up much.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in camp and the preseason. I don't think you can ever be "too stacked" at a position group, but damn this O-line is close.

I do specifically remember Garrett recently saying that they're goal is to get the 5 best guys on the field. If Collins is what we think he is, then I have to think either Free or Leary is not 1st string this year. That alone shows our depth.

Oh, I didn't mean this season. Gibson is a great athlete with all the size and quickness you look for in a tackle, but he needs to learn to play the position and seriously hit some weights. I already said this in another thread, but offensive players from Vah Tech seem to leave school a lot less NFL prepared than the defensive guys. Gibson spent half his college career running around like a headless chicken.
