On several occasions Javonte blasted up the middle for 10+ yards on back to back runs and the next three plays were passes. I'm sorry but that is just inexcusable. You do NOT stop yourself when you're running the rock like that. We should have handed it to Javonte 25-30 times. Yes I know his shoulder was banged up.. That's what shots are for!!!! And as a runner you get to decide which shoulder you slam into the tackler. Put the ball under the left arm and punish the defenders with the right shoulder. I have to admit I had hope after Schottie stuck with the run when we got close that first time.. but he reverted to pass happy mode far too often for my tastes. We simply do not have that red zone target to be throwing it down there.. at least not as long as Pickens is dealing with whatever the hell is wrong with him. I find myself worried that Schottenheimer is giving Dak too much leeway to audible out of runs. He needs to tell him "look man, I don't care if they put 11 on the line of scrimmage.. I want to run it here... We need to send a message. "

That's the problem when you have a Lamb and a Pickens, you think those guys want to not get the ball some during the drive of course they do, but running and running and running and 1 pass every once in a while might not be good, got to have balance, with having those 2, our balance would be 80/20 (pass to run!)

I am not talking about going full wishbone here.. I am talking about when you are beating the defense down with the run you need to continue to do it. Not only because of what it does for YOUR offense which is open up the play action but also because of the toll it takes on defensive players. Having 330 pound guys leaning on you while a 230 pound back is comin at you is not something any defensive player wants over and over. It pays dividends in the 4th quarter as defenders either check out mentally after getting hammered on for three quarters or their bodies just can't hold up any longer. Marty-ball knew this.. It appears it is not knowledge he passed on to his son.

I think he busted his shoulder, but you're right. We need to play bully ball just to keep Eberfools defense on the sidelines.

and I hear you, we're just not built like that mentally to do that, we've wanted this for YEARS, our coaches just don't want to smash the ball down people's throats!!!!

Schottie's (or is it Dak's) going away from the run in some situations is maybe the biggest disappointment of the season for me.. aside from the stench coming from the defensive side of the ball of course. I really thought we were going to be more of a smash mouth team with a huge offensive line and a big physical back totin the rock behind it. I have no real explanation for why we aren't.. I just know that it makes me sad to see us dropping back over and over when it has become clear our tackles cannot give Dak time to even get to his drop.

To do that we need another RB, we can't just run Williams into the ground, we have a lot of DL dressing every game which is a factor too in itself

I thought this should have been a Marty Ball kind of game too even though I'm a pass to run guy.

Sometimes, you have to switch it up.

Well said. As they say, keep it simple stupid. In those instances you mentioned, he complicated matters.

And there it is! Year after year preseason chatter focuses on running the ball, yet the play-calling takes a hard left even when RB’s are getting 5 yds/carry.

I’ve said for a couple years now that the Cowboys will put running the ball on a pitch count, window dressing if you will, just so they can hurry and get to the pass. The “why” is because they don’t have a big name, high $$$$ RB. They patchwork the backfield with Dowdle & Williams types and tell you they’re covered but in their hearts they hope those guys are just slightly better than serviceable (They’ve been well above serviceable).

Play calling fails when these no-names actually SUCCEED. How can this happen? Money and flash are tied up on the perimeter and behind center. They’re supposed to steal the show!

The only way this changes is to draft a RB early or pay $$$$ for a top-tier proven commodity. If Jeremiah Love was behind the line with Dak and getting 5 yds/carry, how many times you think he touches the ball on a 12 play drive?

Sounds good to me

Plus it takes the ball out of Dak's hands which is always a positive.

I was raging about that too!
But, lads, we seem to have a stud as our RB.

There was one play it look like Dak could have jogged into the end zone or a big gain but I think it was down near the end zone and they had to settle for a field goal. And the Vikings had all these players at the line scrimmage and he still handed it off to Jovante when 90% chance he could have kept it waltzed into the end zone!!! :laugh::D

It's simple. Schotty would never be a HC in the NFL if not for Jerry Jones. What do you expect from a McCarthy favor-hire promoted only because McCarthy actually thought some other team would hire him? Also he'll work for cheap.

I'm not going to condemn Schottie for some growing pains. I am willing to give him some grace as a first year coach who was hamstrung by an AWFUL defensive coordinator. No head coach/OC can operate normally when the defense is out there letting every other team hang 40. He is having to abandon anything and everything he learned about game management in his 25 years in the league because of the buffoonery on the defensive side of the ball. My hope is that if we get him a reliable defense he will make better decisions about how to manage the game. He gets total mulligan from me for having to manage this mess he inherited.

Doesn't matter. Any puppet is going to get AT LEAST three years here unless we go winless next season.
