Lions | Wide receivers will have to compete
Fri, 17 Feb 2006 20:38:38 -0800

Steve Pate, of The Daily Oakland Press, reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz claims the wide receiving corps of WR Roy Williams, WR Charles Rogers, and WR Mike Williams will be made to compete. Martz said, "You look at these guys and see the potential that's not been realized, and you think maybe you can do that. That's the ego in you. The only thing I would say is they've got to compete, and we'll give them every opportunity to compete. They're going to be made to compete, or basically, it's going to be very difficult for them."

Lions | Martz views K. Jones as 30-carry back
Fri, 17 Feb 2006 20:38:01 -0800

Steve Pate, of The Daily Oakland Press, reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz views RB Kevin Jones as a 30-carry back. Martz said Jones is the type of explosive player "you can hang your hat on." Martz said, "When you want a guy who can carry the mail, so to speak, and can do that 35 times a game, he can do that. Or he can turn around the next week and carry it five times and catch 10 passes. He has that type of versatility; we just need to shine it up a little bit."

Lions | Martz declares West Coast offense dead
Fri, 17 Feb 2006 20:07:20 -0800

Steve Pate, of The Oakland Press, reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz declared the West Coast offense in Detroit deader than a bad drum Thursday, Feb. 16. Martz feels QB Joey Harrington will be given every opportunity to work with the offense Martz pieces together. On his style of offense versus the West Coast offense, Martz said, "It's a culture shock. It's totally different. All the drops that we use, the terminology is different, everything's different. I think it's a good thing for (Harrington) to go through. It's a new chapter in my life, and I think it's a nice chapter for Joey."

Indeed I am. It's all about Mike Williams.

I wonder if Mike will ever become what a lot of us thought he would be right out of the gates? I was sold on him in the beginning, but definitely have questions about his heart and ability... not to mention his health on the field.

He also chose Steven Jackson over Jones when he was with the Rams.

I scoff at this! I laugh at this! :lmao2:

NOW he wants a 30 carry RB? Why couldn't he do that as HC? He had a RB very capable of carrying the ball 30 times, and Martz only ran him to show the media that running the ball doesn't work! Martz would often give up on the Run game ater the RB was stopped twice for no gain. Whatta hypocrite!

I think Harrington has what it takes. The guy was really good in college (im a Duck, bit of bias here) but he needed a fresh start. Weather it was in Detroit or somewhere else, the WCO wasn't working.

Martz makes alot of QB's look good. I dont think that they have the same caliber of WR in Detroit, as St. Louis. Martz has a more intermediate/downfield style than the WCO, which is more suited for Harrington. Fix the OLine and itll make it alot better for him.

That's the one thing I like about Martz, he hates the West Coast Offense as much as I do.

Plus he said, when he was on NFL total Access thursday, he has no playbook per se. He said he will be building as they go, just like they did in St. Lious, based on the personell they have and what they are comfortable and good at. He said he was more vertical in St. Lious, because thats what they were good at.

So I am guessing, it wont be as vertical in Detroit as it was in St. Lious. It'll be interesting to see if they run more or not.

Also from the staff they have assembled, Lions got exactly what they needed. Tough, demanding coaching staff. Lions have had reputation, since Barry Sanders to be not to be a good pratice team, which showed in games many times, even though they had very good talent.
