Truly a golden age of Boxing. I remember that fight like it was yesterday. Hearns was quick, tall and rangy. He had a powerful left jab that would sting you but he would really get a tremendous amount of leverage off his right, which would often come as a short chopping shot. Very accurate with his hands but he kept his hands low and that opened him up to fighters who could get inside of his range. He was tall, over 6 foot, which was tall for a Welterweight, at the time. Hagler was relentless and a very fine technical boxer, particularly inside. Hagler had tremendous power himself and could walk through punches and land his own to put you out. He had a great chin and he was a true Middleweight, he was not a beefed up Welterweight and that was the big difference. Hearns was vicious but he didn't have the chin. That fight was brutal and in the end, it was Haglers ability to fight inside and continuously pressure Hearns, landing shots on Tommy Hearns, brutal wicked shots that just punished him. Hitman got his shots in as well but it was Haglers ability to take the damage and keep coming that won out.
This was a fight between two knock out artists. Two guys who liked to impose their will on fights and just overpowered all comers. The Difference, to me, was that Hagler was a natural Middleweight, Hearns was a natural Welterweight that moved up to fight at 160 lbs.
Maybe the best short fight I've ever seen. An honest to God fight where both of those men believed in their heart of hearts that only one man was walking out of that ring. It was Hagler in the end.
