ARLINGTON — From SWAT teams to police sharpshooters to bomb-sniffing dogs, security was tighter than ever at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington Sunday evening in the hours leading up to the NBA All-Star game.
The measures in place went several steps beyond what Cowboys fans have been subjected to, and approached the level of Super Bowl security.
Every person in what was expected to be the biggest crowd ever to watch a live basketball game was made to go through a metal detector.
Thousands of law enforcement officers from federal, state, and local agencies manned positions in and around the huge domed arena.
The arsenal of terrorism deterrents included bomb-sniffing dogs and police marksmen deployed at strategic locations.
Officials believe a strong showing of police presence cut down on arrests during and after Saturday night's NBA event at American Airlines Center.
In addition to star basketball players, there were many celebrities in town, including P Diddy and Jay Z, with off-duty police officers working as security guards.
Dallas police said there were four assaults at a local club involving employees and people who worked for unnamed celebrities.
Dallas police reported 13 public intoxication arrests and two arrests for possession of counterfeit credentials.
Mayor Tom Leppert of Dallas told News 8 he was very proud that there had been no major problems associated with the NBA weekend events.
