Bc they put themselves in a bind by protecting Garrett and firing Marinelli. Could you imagine how that would look around the league for this puppet to get a 4th d-coordinator despite the defense being decent last season? Why can’t this team just fire people like normal?
Bumping Rod to “assistant head coach” is pretty much what they did to Kiffen isn’t it?
He was offered assistant head coach. Most would consider that a rise up the corporate ladder and probably a pay increase. I doubt there is any worry with offending Rod. He's damned close to retirement and it's a shame if he retires next year (he signed a 2 year exytensin last year) and Eberflus is no longer an optionAnd how do you put the genie back in the bottle?
"Yeah, uh Rod, I know we tried to give the job to Eberflus, but we'd really love to have you back..."
replacing parts of the snake, but keeping the head, Garrett, so why bother with these bits and pieces move...full purge needed..

I tend to believe @BrAinPaiNt 's take that it was more like "MEH... time to move on"....According to this the Cowboys offered him the job and would give Marinelli the role of assistant head coach, but Eberflus declined because he respects Marinelli and didn't want to step on his toes.

you don't make up titles to move people around like that. it's a huge sign of confusion and lack of a common vision.Hillarious, we are stupid for letting him go and stupid for trying to keep him. Lol
Team didn’t want to hurt Marinelli’s feelings by just dismissing him
Jerry Jones, real life businessman
I interpret this as the Jones' boys being completely reactive instead of proactive. They wait until Eberflus has an offer to leave, then they try to keep him. And it's too late.Great.
Lose Eberflus this year and then Marinelli retires, this year or next.
Even if they happen to find a good one, they're never smart enough to keep them.
But the ones you don't want around? The guys who can't win after 7 years? Yeah, they'll never leave.
As for the current Cowboys, Johnson sees problems with the way Jones has structured the team. Johnson said that in the NFL, everyone — players, coaches, general managers, everyone — is motivated by the fear of losing their jobs. But when Jones has hired himself as general manager, there’s no fear of losing his job — and also no fear of any of Jones’s family members or other personal favorites losing their jobs.
“Really, the No. 1 motivator is fear, you know, fear of maybe letting down your teammates, of being chastised or maybe losing your job. Where’s the fear in Dallas? There’s no fear in Dallas. It’s a country club where everybody’s buddies,” Johnson said.
Johnson says that Jones wants to make sure that everybody understands that he makes the final call because he owns the team. Unfortunately for Jones, everyone does know that. And everyone knows the results in the years since Jimmy Johnson’s players retired have not been good.
