Matt Johnson video

I'm really pulling for this guy to make impact this season, the wrapping can be taught like everyone else said but those instincts are just natural too him, can't wait for preseason!!!GO COWBOYS!!!

The guy is a missel once he plans his foot and starts moving forward. I don't really know what to think of him, I'm in wait and see mode. It would be nice to have a drafted secondary guy really pan out for a change.

Re-watched it again after reading your comments and you're right. Lots of going for the big hit. There were also several very nice open field wrap-up tackles.

I'm not real worried. But it is something to be mindful of.

It seemed to me that there were a lot of smart hits/tackles

Didnt look like any would've drawn a flag, and seemed to angle right at the ball to dislodge it.

plays downhill
does make tackles--dies not always go for the blowup hit
not fast but quick physically and mentally
ball hawk

will be fun to watch in preseason

Wow... his football instincts are off the charts. As someone else said, you can alter his tackling technique but you can't teach instincts. I'm officially excited about this dude.

The video leaves a lot to the imagination but what I found sad is that I'm willing to bet almost half of those "tackles" would of drawn a flag in the NFL.

Your right...but, hopefully the coach will teach him how to tackle. But, the dude has some instincts.

;)

Maybe it's the video quality but I thought most of the time he was leading with his arms/shoulders...?

He could be. I am not making a literal observation that his hits would be illegal in the NFL but noting that in the NFL big hits are often as the Etrade baby says "Frowned Upon!".

I totally agree with you, with the "protective rules". But
I actually thought he was (not necessarily on purpose) making a point to lead with something other than the helmet.the hits did get me hyped though either way.I'll take 1 penalty for a warning shot to the other WRs

Kinda reminds me a bit of Bill Bates. I bet this kid is going to be awesome on ST.

I can't wait to see this kid in preseason. Once he gets the speed of the game down I think he has a legit shot to be very good.

Unfortunately, those first three hits in the video would probably get him flagged in the NFL. :bang2:

I wouldn't worry too much about tackles that were legal in a prior league. He'll be playing by NFL rules now that he's in the NFL.

I'm betting he becomes a pro bowl safety within a few years.

Some observations.

That's some horrible video, can they not afford real cameras and a small camera crew?

He does look like he has instincts, but we'll just have to see when he steps up on the big stage.

I don't mind the blow up hit, it sends a message to receivers although with the fines of the NFL, he may need a fat contract before starting to blow guys up.

Lastly, I really hate that us fans prop up players so high, then they go on to defend the guy even though he may suck only because they were the ones praising him before he could do 1 thing in the NFL.

I just wish people would be cautiously excited, but to each their own. Just know that I don't care who the player is, if they suck, I'll let you, your Mother, and the world know it. And if they are great, same result.

going for big hits is seriously frowned on by the NFL anymore. Even though they use them in advertizing.

That is my main worry about that video.

I like what I have seen in Johnson, he seems to make the reads quickly, has good instincts and a nose for the ball. Hard to say how he will do but I think he has the skill and intangibles to start in this league
