Matt Johnson?

Maybe everyone is overreacting to this latest injury? Its early preseason and he has a precautionary day to day injury. Taking this one by itself it is similar to how they are handling countless other players right now like Twill.

Maybe less pitchfork waving and waiting for a week or two is in order.

I'll ask the musculoskeletal radiologist i shadow about this. Ill get back to you all soon about what he says.

The guy is a second year player... Give him a break... I've only been posting here for a little while but did you guys flame out on Bruce Carter and Sean Lee for being hurt all the time too? Give him a chance to adapt to the NFL

This is what he said "Best way to evaluate for stress changes is on MRI. We see bone marrow edema. We usually stage it. Stage one is just some edema anterior to the bone, usually the tibia. Stage Two is bone marrow edema on T-2 weighted images, stage III is bone marrow edema on T2 and T1 weighted images, which is less sensitive for bony changes/edema. Stay 4 is a discrete fracture

You can also get a bone scan which can be sensitive for stress changes. If it is particular bad you can see i discrete fracture on x-ray."

Hopefully that provides a little context. He reads the scans for the Dallas mavericks.

A stress reaction is just a precursor to a stress fracture. The bone is breaking down, but hasn't actually gotten to the point where it's cracked or fractured. Usually rest is all that needed, with a decrease in weight bearing, either with crutches or a walking boot. He's probably doing a lot of pool exercises. The best way to detect one is typically a combination of MRI and bone scan. Plain X-rays typically don't show stress injuries.

You don't lose a whole season from a stress fracture. At least not typically, unless for some reason it just won't heal. Usually a safe bet is 2-4 weeks, give or take.

Stress fractures are tricky. I got one in football during spring practice and it felt like it took months for it to completely heal.

Man, I feel for you. I've never had one, but I've played, ran, or worked with many who have. And yes, they can be tricky, and persistent. But for the most part, the ones I've seen have resolved within a month. But you're right. Everyone's different. Hopefully Johnson's will heal up quickly.

I've seen enough of Johnson to warrant patience with his injuries. The guy is a physical presense when he's on the field. I realize he hasn't been on the field much, but the defense will be better with him. I believe much better.

We need him, I'm tired of safeties that can't tackle. Remember how bad are safeties were against the Falcons.

I flame out on them all the time. I'm not sold on the health of Lee and Carter. I'd be weary of offering them, especially Lee, a long-term deal.

If they ever drop him from the roster, I hope they have a mattress underneath him or else he'll shatter like fine china.

I was actually impressed that we had a Matt Johnson thread without any ******** injury jokes until ^

You guys are silly, it is not your money and it is not hurting the Cowboys to be patient with Coale or Johnson. The last thing I want is another Jimmy Smith fiasco! Tell the kid from Louisville that a stress fracture is not a big deal!

I love the potential of Johnson playing, but my God, this guy is brittle...

They have displayed almost infinite patience and it does not look like it has wavered. I have never seen anything like it for a mid-round average prospect. It is almost like they are bound and determined to show they stole him or something.

With all fairness, he hasn't been a Cowboy that long. He's in his 2nd year and other than starting him in preseason, they're treating him no differently than any other mid-round draft selection.
