\\A stress reaction is just a precursor to a stress fracture. The bone is breaking down, but hasn't actually gotten to the point where it's cracked or fractured. Usually rest is all that needed, with a decrease in weight bearing, either with crutches or a walking boot. He's probably doing a lot of pool exercises. The best way to detect one is typically a combination of MRI and bone scan. Plain X-rays typically don't show stress injuries.
You don't lose a whole season from a stress fracture. At least not typically, unless for some reason it just won't heal. Usually a safe bet is 2-4 weeks, give or take.
