— "He's the smartest quarterback since Andrew Luck. Someone is gonna trade up to take him No. 1 [overall]." That's what one NFL general manager told me this week about Cal quarterback Jared Goff.

Myles Jack is another player worthy of top-pick consideration, and I'm told by a source with the San Diego Chargers that they're falling in love with the UCLA linebacker. The Chargers sent seven people to the UCLA pro day and ran Jack through defensive back drills after hisworkout.

— While the Chargers showed a ton of interest in Jack, the San Francisco 49ers did too. The team put him through a linebacker workout at the UCLA pro day.

— Mississippi State defensive lineman Chris Jones is generating first-round talk, or rather was before he was arrested for driving with asuspended license. That report, from Michael Bonner of the Clarion-Ledger, had one area scout who has spent time with Jones texting me, "top-15 body, bottom-15 head." Jones isn't considered a bad-character player, but rather someone who is a bit clueless and lazy off the field.

— The Carolina Panthers have used a first- and second-round pick in the last two drafts to add receivers Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess, respectively, but I'm told by front-office personnel they'd love to add a vertical threat at receiver in the middle rounds of the draft.

— Following an excellent pro day that had him running high 4.3s according to scouts on hand, Baylor cornerback Xavien Howard is expected to move himself into the late-first- and early-second-round conversation, per team scouts I've polled.

— The Baylor pro day drew a ton of NFL personnel to Waco, Texas, and I'm told that Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien was in attendance and that he and his scouts took special notice of wide receiver Corey Coleman. With a need at wide receiver opposite DeAndre Hopkins, Coleman makes sense at No. 22 overall.

Boston College safety Justin Simmons improved on his 40-yard dash time with a mid-4.5-second run at his pro day, according to an area scout. I'm also told that Simmons has met with the Detroit Lions three times since the Shrine Game.

Jack Conklin is getting a ton of buzz after a great combine performance. I asked an NFL offensive line coach about him and he said, "Left tackle athleticism, but his footwork right now is backup level."

— The San Francisco 49ers need help at wide receiver, and I've been told by sources with the team that they met with Tyler Boyd of Pittsburgh. Boyd projects as a second-rounder at this time.

— The Ohio State pro day was one week ago, and in the aftermath of that one general manager told me wide receiver Michael Thomas had the best day of anyone there. "He's a better route-runner and athlete than most people realize."

The Washington Commanders rank Ohio State's Michael Thomas as the No. 1 WR in the 2016 NFL Draft, according to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report.

Interesting. "He is the guy the Commanders would most covet," Cole says, adding Thomas has "emerged" as one of the top receivers in this class along with Laquon Treadwell and Will Fuller (we wonder why Corey Coleman and Josh Doctson were not mentioned). It is worth noting that Cole says the Commanders feel that Thomas "likes football the most" out of the receiver group, hammering home his "competitiveness." Pierre Garcon and Desean Jackson both have huge cap hits this season along with cuttable contracts, if the Commanders think about going in that direction. We compare Thomas to Michael Crabtree, a comparison first delivered by Rumford Johnny.

hard to judge thomas right now,the Buckeyes Qbs were not great and they didnt run a complete route tree.I wouldnt be surprised if Thomas goes high in the 2nd Rd though.

That sounds like a quote from the Titans GM.

Michael Thomas WR Ohio St

STRENGTHS
Michael is an excellent route running receiver making cornerbacks look like those colorful spinning tops some of us played with when we were children growing up. He has deceiving speed because of his long legs that cover ground quickly. He has those long arms that give him the potential for a very big catch radius. Michael has good lateral agility and uses a stiff arm to gain yardage after the catch to keep defenders away from his legs. He is very smart and understands how to run routes using different gears to set up defenders so that he can get deep. He gains separation inside the red zone with ease because he is strong off the line of scrimmage against those physical cornerbacks slapping their hands off him and getting into his routes quickly. Michael will be a more protective receiver at the next level than he has been at the college level because he played at a level far above the level of quarterbacking on his team. Michael was a professional receiver at an amateur level and the truth is, in my opinion, it held him back in his production.

CONCERNS
Michael has the “potential” for a large catch radius but has yet to show his ability to consistently adjust to the ball in the air and make the low and high catch. He will need to work on this with the quarterback of the team that selects him. I have no doubt he will improve in this area very quickly.

TALENT BOARD ROUND: 1
Michael runs routes with the maturity of a Larry Fitzgerald. He is far ahead in his route running than most in this draft class. Like I said, he is deceivingly fast and with his ability to get off the line of scrimmage against bump and run and his football intelligence running routes against zone coverage, Michael sends the signal that he is a complete receiver ready for the next level. He is underrated and a bit of a sleeper in this draft because of all the talent on the team that he played with and the lack of consistency at the quarterback position. In college, Michael was a professional receiver playing at the amateur level and it held him back in his production. There is no doubt in my mind that when he improves his catch radius that Michael can become the type of receiver you can build your passing game around.

I've been on the Goff train for a while...

But if our great FO passes on QB at 4 Myles Jack going #3 to SD would be ideal. I have a pretty good feeling either Ramsey or Bosa will be #1 on our board so have to be at least happy about getting our guy.

Looking at the big picture of this year's draft class, I expect there to be around 20 players receiving a first-round grade when our NFL Draft 400 series launches. Last year, just 15 players were graded above the line, so the overall depth this year is better.

But how many players are worthy of a top pick? Last year it was Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Leonard Williams or Dante Fowler as the top-ranked player overall. This year, there are six who are truly worthy of that value.

Jared Goff and Carson Wentz, at quarterback, are the obvious selections. Not only are they both talented, but they play the most premium position in the sport. Laremy Tunsil is the best left tackle in the draft. For some he's the best overall player regardless of position, which definitely makes him a worthy candidate to be selected first.

Linebacker Myles Jack and cornerback Jalen Ramsey play positions that generally aren't drafted first overall, but both are otherworldly talents and clearly worth it from a talent perspective. And finally, Joey Bosa, the defensive end from Ohio State. He's a pass-rusher in a league that craves pressure off the edge. Not only is he a value by nature of his position, but he is worthy based on his talent.
There is some good stuff.

Goff is the only qb I take at four or higher.
I like Wentz, but not sure about his ability to go through his progressions.
Lynch would be a great mid-late first rounder. Very young, but has tremendous tools.
After that Prescott, C.Jones and Driskell for me-none earlier than round three.

Jared Goff QB California

STRENGTHS
Jared is another quarterback who has improved in every game I have seen him in this year. He has excellent arm talent to make all the throws with touch when needed along with accuracy and velocity that is expected from a top quarterback for the next level. Jared has a very quick release plus quick feet that help him to set up quickly and keep his balance to execute with outstanding accuracy when he throws the ball. He plays with a healthy fear of personal failure that drives him to succeed and improve. He is demanding of the players around him and because of his accuracy and football intelligence, has the respect of his teammates on the field. Jared gets rid of the ball quickly because he is able to read defenses at the college level and look for mismatches in the passing game. He obviously patterns and copies his set ups and drops (from under center) on Peyton Manning’s style and in doing so, has improved dramatically from the first game of this season to the last bowl game. Jared has franchise talent and potential.

CONCERNS
Jared struggles when working from a muddled pocket and under duress. He fights it and has improved this year by setting up quicker and making better decisions in his pre-snap reads. The problem is these improvements have only accomplished making sure he doesn’t work from a muddled pocket -- it doesn’t improve his ability to work from one. His leadership will depend on how well he can deal with this issue at the next level. He must continue to improve in reading defenses and understanding how to use the running game to keep the pressure off him. No matter what he does, at some point he will have to stand tall and prove he can play from a collapsed pocket.

TALENT BOARD ROUND: 1
How well any quarterback handles adversity during a game is the key to being a successful quarterback in the NFL, providing they have the talent. Whether or not a QB can adjust mentally and physically when defenses are game planning to take away the best plays and players, decides your success in winning. When everything is going right, Jared is one of the best. When things start to break down Jared does adjust, but this fear of failure will haunt him at times. He needs to avoid panic in adverse situation or, at the NFL level, this will lead to magnified mistakes. He needs to mature and accept his play when it’s bad -- turn the page and improve just like a cornerback who gets burned on the deep pass needs to do. Jared has the talent to be exceptional. His accuracy passing the ball is outstanding. The fact he has been improving and adapting his game to address his lack of ability to work from the pocket under duress and extend plays is impressive, but the truth is he hasn’t improved on that weakness; he has just been able to mask it. At the next level, no matter how quickly he gets rid of the ball, the pocket will become muddled and he has to learn to stand tall, deliver, get hit and come back for more. I think he can do it. In fact, I would bet on it. Jared has big time talent, football intelligence and just enough fear of failure to become the quarterback his talents suggest that he can become. He has the potential to be a franchise quarterback.

Jared Goff will be 22 this year and Wentz 24.

I don't know how people can say Wentz has more upside.

I'll take Goff who is already the better QB and is 2 years younger.

He won't go in the first or second round. Stop it.

Sounding more and more like Ramsey might make it past the Chargers, or at least they're planning to trade out of 3. Safe pick but I don't know that he really changes our fortunes, even if he became a Rod Woodson level player.

Agree with Derinyar. Goff quote from "NFL General Manager" = Titans. lol

Good group in the 5 Players to Know section. I'd love Charone Peake with the 3rd, Ronald Blair with 4a, and DeAndre Houston-Carson with 4b. Cowser looks like a middle age PE teacher.

He's the one who couldn't even keep the little one in his pants at the combine.

If the Chargers take Jack then get prepared for us to take Ramsey.

I see him as an early 2nd rounder too. I also think he should go ahead of teammate Braxton Miller, but Miller has been receiving more hype. But I'd take the more polished Thomas over the converted QB with potential.
