Overview
Despite fairly impressive career statistics (4,806 passing yards, 25 TDs/18 INTs), Ryan's value is seen more in his ability to lead his team to victory than any stat-sheet numbers. Ryan won over teammates in 2005 when he took over the team as a sophomore to win all five of his starts, including an overtime thriller in Clemson, an improbable comeback versus Wake Forest and a bowl game victory over Boise State on the Broncos' home turf. In 2006, Ryan led Boston College to a 10-3 record despite suffering a high ankle sprain in the season opener and then, once that injury began to heal, breaking his foot. Despite the injury, Ryan started the final seven games. To improve his stock Ryan will have to prove capable of remaining healthy. If he does so, his stock could improve dramatically, as his passing inconsistencies in 2006 could have been the result of his injuries.
Analysis
Positives: Prototype size for the position. Flashes good accuracy to all levels of the field. Shows very good touch on intermediate passes. Feels the pressure and steps up in the pocket. Good overall mechanics and follow-through, though he struggled at times in this area last year when bothered by injury. Adept rolling out to either side and can effectively pass on the move. Not a true scrambling threat, but will take yards if given to him and enters his senior year with nine career rushing touchdowns despite having only started 18 games. Has the arm strength to make all of the NFL throws. Tough. Played the final seven games of last season with a broken foot. Doug Flutie is his idol.
