First off I really believe the Ravens offerred the job to Garrett; he spent a long day there before leaving for Atlanta. I also believe for myriad of reasons he didn't jump at the offer. If you interested in hearing Garretts comments before he left Baltimore, see http://www.baltimoresun.com/video/?slug=bal-garrett0115-video

I don't believe the Ravens will wait long for Garrett to respond cause they also very interested in one of the Eagles defensive coaches (or maybe he's their DC). I also don't believe Garrett really wants the Atlanta job.

I do think Garrett might be rethinking whether he is ready to become a head coach right now and or whether his best option is to remain with the Cowboys at least another year. It was a big jump from a 2 year QB coach in Miami to OC of the Dallas Cowboy and yet it did a very good job -- although the last 3 weeks and playoff game he and the team seriously faltered. Frankly I really think Garrett needs more coaching experience before taking on the top job.

Anyone I wouldn't be surprised to hear, either today or Thursday, that he turned down both the Ravens and Falcons head coaching jobs, will not accept any other job interviews because is not yet ready to be the kind of head coach he wants to be and will remain with the Cowboys for at least another year.

I also think Garrett needs to tell his buddy, Troy Aikman, to keep his mouth shut re head coaching option in the next 1-2 years.

Garrett likes to be informed. He is a professional, so when people present him with oppurtunities he listens.... It doesn't mean he'll jump at any oppurtunity...

I'd be surprised if Garrett took that job anyway. Garrett has one of the best up and coming QBs in Romo and a solid OL. He has a bruising RB and a top 3 WR that plays with a fire not seen since Irvin... Arguable the best all around TE in football. The offense will only be better next year as well.
Baltimore is a train wreck... There is a QB on his last legs, I don't even recall the RBs name right now and the WR corps is barely mediocre. They do have a decent TE, but he is the only real offensive threat...
Garrett stays if he wants success. If he wants a headache of a rebuilding job, he leaves.

Good point, Plus the idea that even if he is not interested in the jobs right now he is gaining valuable exp in the interviewing process with different clubs.

I think Jerry told him to go look around but don't accept any deals until he talks to him first.

I don't think these guys are looking at which is the easiest team to take over. Payton took a N.O. job and ended up weeding out all the bad seeds and helped get that team turned around.

Agree. After reading what his Dad said a few weeks ago, I haven't believed he was going to leave for the first opportunity that came along.

I mentioned it a few days ago, but I don't think Garrett is quite ready to be a HC yet either.

I think in 1-2 years he could make a very good HC.

I know a lot of people think when the opportunity is there, just take it, no matter what.

But you definitely want to succeed as well.

And I don't think Garrett's stock is going to go down being the OC in Dallas. Yes, maybe Zimmer's did and he should have gone. But with Garrett, he's got his franchise QB, WR, TE, OL, and RB. Plus, we all know JJ is going to get some more weapons for Romo. JJ has already said so much.

I think given the offensive weapons we have now, plus what JJ will add in the off-season via FA and the Draft, Garrett's star will only shine brighter.

On top of that, in a year or two, he really will have the experience to become a HC.

Could he also be waiting for the Indy job to open when Dungy calls it a career later this season? Or the Seattle job where Holmgren has a perennial playoff contender in place and may leave as well?

There are some really good teams who may lose HCs this year. Maybe he is taking that into consideration as well? I wouldn't mind Manning and Harrison and Freeney on my first team.

If Dungy choses to retire, I believe the Colts fully intend to offer that job to either their DC or OC (sorry can't remember the guy's name but Caldwell might be it). I have heard other teams also interested in one of the Colts coaches so Colts will want to know quickly what Dungy wants to do w/o in anyway pushing him out the door cause they do want him to stay.

I agree.

There is much more about what makes a good coaching situation than how good the team is.

GM, cap situation, ownership, etc. I would be much more interested in whether I felt like my authorities could see the situation clearly and had demonstrated the patience it requires to be successful over the long run.

Or is it a win at all costs now?

Even then, it depends on the candidate. They may be just fine jumping into a "must win" situation where the cards are somewhat stacked against you. Though I doubt thats an appealing to a candidate like Jason who probably knows he'll have his own learning curve to some degree.

Baltimore's last coach was an offensive guru.

If he were to take the job then it would be the same MO for Baltimore.
I think the results would ultimately be different. I think Garrett would get and offense working over there.. it could take a while... but I think that he is the right man for Baltimore.

With that said... I dont think that Baltimore is right for him. Just from an options POV.
