what's wrong with this thought process . . . .

Let's assume for a moment that JJ does want to run the 3-4 as he has invested significant money in attracting the right type of players, and because he believes it's easier to get the players he needs to run this defense (over the long haul).

Ealrier this year, JJ has, in fact, said he wants to stick to the 3-4 for some time to come. Let's just go with this assumption for now . . . .

Why not simply go out and get a defensive co-ordinator who excels in the 3-4 scheme? There are several teams who run the 3-4 better than us. For example, SD, Pittsburgh (maybe not this year, but over the long haul), New England, etc.

Wouldn't it make more sense to get a defensive co-ordinator who has already had success in running this defense?

The problem is that top flight assistants haven't wanted to work for Parcells because he is too controlling.

I think the problem is two-fold:

1) Zimmer was a poor decision by Parcells, especially considering some of the people we could have had, he wasnt any good before he got here, and he isnt any good now

2) I think Parcells is convinced his style of 3-4 works, so it wouldnt matter who was running it...I dont think anything would change simply by GROZ, I think it has to be GROTA

IF BP is back next year, I think he's going to be under an immense amount of pressure to get rid of Zimmer.

But you're right, Zimmer appears to be a poor decision by BP. I think BP HAS to be considering about cutting his losses with Zimmer - if BP returns, that is.

zimmer is not signed for next year so we shall see what happens there, but you can't hire a dc off another team if he's under contract.

Retaining Zimmer wasn't a poor decision by Parcells, the poor decision is constraining him.

Parcells wants the defense a certain way and Zimmer's stuck trying to carry out his commands.

It's like someone letting you drive their Ferrari but not allowing you to take it out of first gear.

Payton got frustrated driving the Ferrari in first gear (remember, he supposedly wanted Romo in) so he took a chance on his own beat up old Buick. Looks to be running pretty good too.

The difference is that it's not that they can't perform, it's just that they aren't performing right now. They've done it all season, but didn't show up for the Saints game, a couple quarters of the Giants and Falcons games, and this game.

Not sure what GROTA means...but I'm not too convinced that this is all Parcells' philosophy when it comes to the 3-4. Hell, Zimmer rarely blitzed, didn't disguise blitzes well and rarely stunted under Campo when we played the Cover 2 defense. On the flip side, we are very versatile and creative with our offensive formations and plays, yet we are the direct opposite on defense. I think Parcells would prefer to be conservative on offense and defense, but the offensive guys have convinced Parcells that they can be creative and versatile on offense whereas I believe Zimmer thinks that this is the best course of attack on defense.

Even still, I don't have a problem with the blitz percentages and while I would like to see more stunting, it's not the biggest issue to me. We can't disguise a blitz to save our life. We've changed schemes, head coaches, players, etc...but the one common denominator remains.

This is a spot-on take. I'm all for replacing Zimmer, but that's because he's a 4-3 guy and we're running Parcell's version of the 3-4. Actually, I can't say it better than he's already said it above.
