Jerry is a lot of things but he is the furthest thing from stupid.

About marketing, salesmanship and making money, absolutely! Talking about football IQ, planning and team building is another story entirely.

For those that cant access the link, it says a 12% decline in DFW ratings from the previous season.

That's actually pretty bad considering that the team had an identical record from the previous year. Usually you see a big decrease in ratings when you have a tank season, not a season in which you win just as many games as the year before.

This might be an indication that fans, at least locally, are getting tired of the stale product on the field. In other words, we really need to move off 8-8 in one direction or the other. We either need to have a breakout 10 or 12 win season or we need to just go in the tank with a 4 or 5 win season.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Jones knows all of these things....I just don't think he cares at all...he sells out every game (even though probably 20% of that is fans from other teams)...as long as it is "entertaining", he doesn't care

Pretty sure you are in the minority with that opinion.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I think people might be confusing ridiculing someone with laughing at them. Theres nothing funny about some of the mistakes that Jerry has made. I guess there could be more than one kind of laughing tho.

Poor journalism.

Reporting should have sought reaction from Dallas-Fort Worth advertising marketers. They pay particular significance to local market ratings. They peer through such shallow numbers as these and examine household information like, "Who is watching the team? What do they do for a living? "And what do they spend their income on?" Then, they use that information to cater specific audiences with their commercial campaigns which air during Cowboys games. Additionally, marketers can use the information to agree or balk at contract ad rates suggested by local network affiliates--affecting their bottom lines too.

The Dallas News could have done a simple telephone sampling of local advertisers. They could have surveyed them about their past, current, and future marketing strategies. Questions could have been discover how much advertisers were currently spending on Cowboys commercials and were they satisfied with their targeted audience returns. And, more importantly, advertisers could have been asked whether they thought it more prudent to divert a greater share of their marketing budget dollars to radio, print, internet, etc., instead of Cowboys broadcasts. Heck, they could have quizzed prominent local merchants and reported why they don't buy local ad time during Dallas games.

Then, you could have tried to contact the Dallas front office for a reaction. Maybe could have caught Jerry Jones during happy hour and landed yourself a whiskey quote. Oh boy! That would have been some fancy reading material there, Billy Bob! Shazam!

... but oh no.

You get some numbers (which you didn't compile by the way).

You create some graphs. They are pretty snazzy though...

And you publish them with a tantalizing headline:
