Don't agree. There are slots in the NFL indicating what players are worth. Darnold got 33, that's about where Mayfield should be.

I do not believe in the next man up thing. It's really dumb, if you think about it. There are levels to proven starters. Mayfield is not top level. When you pay the Mayfields of the NFL top dollar, it makes it impossible to make a super bowl run.

Darnold got 33 last year because he had only performed one year though. Mayfield has multiple years of good performance. No, absolutely not top level but neither is Dak, Lawrence, Tua, etc..

As I've said, I'm all for rolling back some of these salaries but there are other factors that have to be considered to arrive at the $ value for those levels. With Cap north of $300M, bottom of the barrel starters should be getting at least 10% which would be north of $30M. 15% for proven starter level but not elite puts you in the $45M range. In my mind that is a reasonable range for Mayfield. But I understand why he's saying $50M based on what has actually occurred in the QB market.

Two other side notes, there isn't enough starter level QB's in the league right now. Supply & demand is in the favor of any player who has proven himself viable. If I'm a QB expected to be the starter for a full season, I'm not stepping onto the field for less than $34M ($2\game) and I would want my salary to auto escalate with cap & any increase to the number of games, etc. To carry the weight of a franchise, that seems like a pretty reasonable starting point for QB salaries.

Like I said, you do not see other positions with such poor performance being rewarded this way.
Sure you have stupid GMs like ours giving bad contracts but noting like what you see virtually every team doing with QBs

"Good" is a stretch. He's been OK. Good playmaker, but all to often is wildly inconsistent. Not close to top tier.

It's ok for players to believe they are worth whatever amount. It's up-to the team to make the decision to pay them or not. I thought the browns were dumb to trade then pay Watson but I don't blame the player for wanting the moon.
