• Lack of linemen. Another issue that will get plenty of attention this draft season is the lack of top tier offensive tackle prospects. There have been three tackles taken in the top 14 in each of the past three drafts, but that's not expected to be the case this year. This is clearly the wrong year to own a top 10 pick if you're seeking a franchise left tackle.

"There are some left tackles you like, but you're not going to get immediate star power in the top 10 picks of the draft like you do most years,'' Mayock said. "It's more the late first round where most of them are this year. There are guys who could get pushed up higher due to need, and the value of the position. But they're graded right now in the mid to lower part of the first round.''

Colorado's Nate Solder, Boston College's Anthony Castonzo, Wisconsin's Gabe Carimi and Derek Sherrod of Mississippi State are the prospects who have the most first-round potential, but what unfolds at the Senior Bowl and the NFL scouting combine in late February might add to that list.

Works for me.

Or trade down and maybe get two good ones.

Lack of prospects and increase in need just mean these marginal players will get picked a round HIGHER not lower.

This makes FA signing even more important this year so we DON'T reach for lesser talent due to need.

That would suck.

It seems that most teams have begun to learn to not reach too much early on based on need. Certainly the best drafting teams do not do it. They take BPA with a bias toward team needs and if the value is not there they make a trade.

Then there are the Oaklands of the world; but even they did much better last year.

Unfortunately we (Cowboys) do it all the time and so do other teams. I still remember we drafted 4-5 CBs in out of 8-9 pick in one year due to need and they were all busts.

Everyone KNOWS we need TWO OL so they will be trying to jump in front of us if they desire someone (OL). It's critical that we signs FA OL. Doesn't have to be Mankins even though it would be nice but must pick up someone capable of starting.

The ambiquity of the draft increases in the later rounds and I thnk the reaching happens more there....though you are right, it still does happen earlier for some teams.

Off the top of my head, I can't recall the Cowboys reaching to extremes in the 1st 3 rounds for a while now. But I haven't looked it up. I do know they haven't drafted very well overall.

We traded down and picked up marginal players just to get more picks quite a few time in recent memory. This tactic is haunting us now.

Drafting a #9 and we want a particular player that's rated #15-16....I really wouldn't get cute and try to trade down to pick up an extra lower round pick and "justify" value. I would pick the player we REALLY wanted maybe slightly higher but whom we WANTED and believe can contribute right away.

I agree that the shotgun approach to drafting that they used two years ago was horrible....and I said so at the time. To exaggerate the point, twenty 7th round picks may equal one 1st rounder value-wise, but they do you NO good if they can't play.

They passed on some very good players--regardless of need. Take the best player, I say. But if you must reach for need, please make it only 2-3 slots at the very maximum.

I would prefer we did not pick a player we had rated 15-16 in the 9 slot but that is not the end of round 1 or early second round value stretch we were referring to. Reaching 6-7 slots (especially in the 1st round) is bad, but I've seen much worse happen.

I disagree with reaching 6-7 slot is bad. Reaching more than 10 slots is bad (for a pick that is CONSENSUS ) but anything less isn't that dramatic. Different team rate players differently. Also we know "retrospectively" unless you are picking in the top 3-5, player rating and his performance during their 1st yr or career doesn't correspond well. We've seen many of these "retrospective" drafts and many 2nd rounders or lower 1st rounders become 1st rounds and high first round picks and vice versa.

I would be really worried if we were looking for our future LT; however, this is not the case. I think we could get someone in the 2nd or 3rd rounds to compete with Young for the RT position. I'm crossing my fingers that this CBA mess gets taken care of and Jerry brings in some free agents. Do you think it is realistic that Young will be ready by the beginning of next season to take over for Colombo?

no

I think we Draft Carimi/Sherrod to take over for Columbo

I hear you.

No doubt that retrospective drafts always open some eyes. But all a team can do is go with their own board (not some sort of consensus rating or someone elses board). Last year, for example, Jacksonville got bashed for using the 10th pick on Alualu becasue maybe 25 out 32 teams didn't have him that high. Turns out that the 25 were probably wrong and the 7 were more in the ballpark, as he is a stud. They trusted their board just like Cleveland did with TJ Ward in the early 2nd round.

In the 1st round, a value drop from 9th to 16th is the equaivalent of givng up a late 2nd rounder for free...that is very expensive.

Either way, I see what your saying and for most part we agree on this. I hated the continuous trading down and getting cute that happened a couple of years ago.

In the end, I think the issues that year were 1) we had already given up our 1st and 3rd round pick for Roy, and 2) we tried to make up for it and thought we were picking value at those later slots but in fact had done a poor job of scouting. I'll trade a bunch of busts picked late for one superstar picked very early any day...but that's hindsite.

What if the Cowboys' targeted player is in the middle of the first (falls)? Say Jacksonville wants to move up, offers Dallas a 1st in 2012, and 5th for 2011, would you do it? I'd hedged my bet that Jacksonville will struggle this next season, netting a nice pick in 2012, presumably top ten. I know, the Buffalo and Cleveland picks weren't exactly what we hoped they'd be. I'm assuming the Jaguars will be looking for a QB.

The thing is, the only that matters is where we have the players graded. If someone like Sherrod or Carimi get a first round grade, then it's not much of a reach. Doesn't matter what the "experts" think.

Take Tyson Alualu. He was someone the boys gave a first round grade to, and were hoping would still be there in the 20's. Went to Jacksonville at 9/10. Obviously, that's who they wanted. Maybe they tried to trade back and couldn't, or were afraid he wouldn't be there when they picked. Either way, he turned out to be a great pick for them, and was worth the spot.

Read today where a lot of WR's are going back to school. If a team like STL (at 14) wants to move up to take a guy like Julio Jones, they might be a good trading partner.

Won't happen.

Castonzo MIGHT fall to round 2.

I don't want to say " told you so ", but I'm gonna say " told you so ".. ( not directly to you RS)

Once Scouts released their best prospect list about a month or two ago, anybody could see that this draft was going to be weakened by the fact that there are not any top of the line Tackles, and no " big name " running backs either. It got a little bit stronger once Julio Jones and Blackmon declared for the draft, but it was going to be very weak at the receiver position too..

On the other hand, as I said then too: if a team needs an pass rushing DE or OLB, they're in luck because there are a bunch of 'em in this one. I mean, forget the top 5, once you get past the 6th, 7th pick, of the draft, all the way to near the 20th's, there's a chance a good pass rusher is going to fall there.

Perhaps even the best of the bunch when it's all said and done.

I've read where Nate Solder is rising.

Tyron Smith (junior) is going to go real high, I think. He has a good shot at the top 10 from what I've read. Broaddus brought his name up in a chat as a potential name to watch at number 9. If Jerod Mayo can rise to number 10 as a junior, an OT like Smith can, too.

I've seen Sherrod all year long, if he goes off at the Senior Bowl, he's going to knock on the door of the top 10. He stated that his goal was to go in the top 10.

Smith and Sherrod are players with upside, and that has to be considered, too. Solder is, too. However, his height worries me some. These shorter OLBs and DEs can bend and get under you.

I predict at least one OT will go in the top 10. I say all three of these guys will come off the board fast. There should be a run on these three guys. If one goes in the top 10, the run will start pretty quick.
