Cowboys DT Mazi Smith said he's going into Year 2 with a clean slate. "I want to be the best me I can be. And I know what that can get me. It got me to this point. ... Last year was hard for me. ... I feel I'm where I'm supposed to be now."

"I got the athletic traits to be an upfield guy but I got the strength to play at the line of scrimmage and build a wall."

Smith said he wants to be around 310-315 pounds this season

After the screwed up way he was handled last year, I have far more faith in Ellis and Zim to get Mazi going this year. All off season reports have him doing much better and much more prepared to play than last year. It's still far too soon to write him off or say he was a horrible pick or bust.

I was hoping his playing weight would be around 320-325
That 310-315lbs. screams position flex, as if the staff
would rather have that position flex than a stout run stuffer.

Hard to have faith when it comes to the way we've handled the tackle position.
But there's always hope :flagwave:

Yeah me too. Was thinking he was slowly putting on quality weight and still building. Maybe not..

Everybody talks in camp, not everyone shows up during the season

Sounds like he’s in a much better place this year. Reports are his quickness off the ball is back.

It really was there last season mid year. I think Mazi being slow off the ball has less to do with him not being physically capable and a lot more to do with him not feeling comfortable with his reads. If they keep him mostly at 1T I think it should simplify things for him, and we will see a better player. I was a fan of what DQ was trying to do with him at the time, but looking back having him play so much outside the G was probably the worst thing for his development.
