This was the big issue that I saw in his first preseason game. Once the ball was snapped he was one of the last to move on our line. At times it looked like he was just waiting for the double team so he could take them on. If he is going to have any success rushing the passer or collapsing the pocket they will need to teach him quicker technique or ques getting off the ball quicker. He is going to have to do more than just take on the double team and not give up ground. And its not like he was NOT giving up ground at times either. He definitely isn't quick enough to chase down QB's.

He's a rook at a position that takes a little time to develop. I hope for the best, but it's up to him to improve upon said deficiencies.
He has time, but I know fans don't want to give players time. We're the microwave generations where things better get cooked and on the double.
It is what it is.

If you can go back to last season and check out a few plays with Hankins. This is what he did also. Don’t seem like it does much but he takes on 2 people out of 5 on there o-line and usually a 3rd may chip on the way by. That leaves LB clean and can free up a D-Lineman at times.

Im simply expressing what I saw. I very much liked the pick and like the player. But he has a lot to learn if he is going to get into the backfield more. Its definitely only one game, but he way playing well into the 2nd half against 3rd teamers and wasnt dominating by any stretch. We already know that strength is not an issue as that is the problem with a lot of college guys. So for him its going to be technique. Can a guy learn to get off the ball quickly? He has pretty much said that his mindset is stopping the run. Im was just hoping he could be more then that. We shall see.

I agree. Let's hope he develops a better anticipation of the count and snap as he learns the game at the NFL level.
It's a necessary skill.

But he was supposed to be premium pass rusher , whereas Mazi was drafted for 1 Tech Nose tackle position , whose primary role is clog the middle and take on double teams and hold ground.
He has to be more then just some big body that holds his ground and takes on double teams to be worthy of a first round pick. He needs to be a disrupter. Needs to make tackles for losses, collapse the pocket, get that push up the middle.

I guarantee you that Clay and Quinn saw him as more then that. They probably saw the potential upside as a disrupter and penetrator.

We will watch him evolve.....the rest of the story remains to be written but nothing wrong with posting what your eyes are telling you at this point

I noticed that when Michigan played TCU. I didn't consider Mazi a 1st round talent.

This was a knock on him in college so it will probably take a while before they can get him to anticipate. He did show ability to hold his ground despite letting the OL get the jump on him, which was pretty good. He did lose some, but overall, the middle was pretty solid and the linebackers were kept fairly clean.

Were you focused on his play and what was happening around him along with their probable assignments while you were watching?
Or were you just watching the game and you thought this when you were rounding up to the Draft?

I was factoring in everything.

Mazi wont be a stat grabber, but think he can be a good contributor. Likely splitting snaps with Hankins for most of the season. Different player than Marcus Spears, but Spears was a solid player. I hope for more from Mazi than Spears but if thats his floor itll be a position the Cowboys feel fine with for the next 5-6 years..
