PICK NO. 26: DALLAS COWBOYS: DI MAZI SMITH

Overall Rookie Grade: 41.9 (Rank: 12/13)
Principal Opponent:
Landon Dickerson
Week 9 Snaps: 12
Week 9 Grade: 35.4

Though he played just 12 snaps, Smith finished with a team-low 35.4 overall grade and 40.8 run-defense grade. He struggled a couple of times with Jason Kelce’s footwork in the zone running game and with Landon Dickerson‘s strength. Smith currently carries the third-lowest run defense grade among qualified defensive tackles (30.2).

Apparently weight room strength in this case not translating to football strength. A guy his size should not be handled so easily. There is time for the light to come on but.....

Cut him and let him go like all the other use to be Jonesboys to another team and win a Super Bowl.

He is a rookie...3 year rule.

Honestly he is right where I expected him to be. I thought he was a second round caliber guy. When his name picked up steam as a target, I thought it was more for the second than first. I think people got happy when we finally too a big DT and oversold themselves.

Im not down on him. He is actually doing better than expected on pass rushing downs. Even as a run defender he was still raw at Michigan, so struggles there were to be expect. Im optimistic that can be a 3 down DT though

I was happy when the team went DT and was optimistic that Mazi could at least be the type of guy who eats blocks. I've been surprised how slow and unathletic he looks.

He is just a rookie and I hope he gets better but he has a loooooong way to go. He isn't even in the ballpark of being an impact player. Osa showed more as a rookie.

In his defense not everyone gets it right away. Even Quinnan Williams wasn’t good in his first year. Several others as well.

It wasn’t a bad pick and they were due to bust a first quite honestly, not that he is that by any means just yet.

You’re not hitting on every one of your top picks consistently which is why I get on the two geniuses for counting on draft picks to fill immediate holes.

What if we just got him on a new eating plan? 18,000 calories a day. No exercise. Hotdogs.... ice cream sundaes topped with hotdogs... buckets of mayonnaise... just high fat, high calorie, low nutrition diet...and get this blubber-boy up to 900 lbs.

Then just have him lay down in the middle of the line on each play.. and spread his fat out. If he got enormous enough, RBs would have no choice but to run around him...and that could take quote some time.
