He has shown nothing, but most fans will say wait and let him develop for 3 years until they admit he was a bust. All I know is he's a punk for saying he doesn't like football. You just like to hit people? Talk AFTER you learn not to get pancaked.

Donald was a superstar in the making. I was destroyed when he went ahead of us in the draft. All the hallmarks before day one in nfl.
I was pissed. The Rams did not even have a need at that time. I thought we were getting him for sure.

Mazi Smith is this season’s first-round rookie for the Dallas Cowboys. Every year, for the most part, there is that particular player who has to carry the lofty expectations as we saw exercised a bit following last week’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

While Smith may take a bit of time to fully develop, as is normal for interior defensive linemen, there is very little likelihood that the Cowboys are regretting drafting him. We have heard constantly from the team about how they valued him, and even shortly after the draft the mothership released a video that showed a bit of the process going into that pick that revealed how Dallas chose Smith over Syracuse OT Matthew Bergeron.

Friday we got more clarity on this front, specific clarity if you will. You may recall that leading up to the draft that Dallas was connected with many of the top tight end targets like Dalton Kincaid and Michael Mayer. In fact, the Buffalo Bills may have been so hip to that to the point that they traded up one spot in front of the Cowboys in order to select Kincaid themselves.

There are a lot of trade in front of the Cowboys...Jerry Rice was another as well.

Mazi has in my opinion looked awful in both preseason games. For all the touting his size, strength, and so on just dont see it here. He is pushed around willy nilly on the line and dont believe this is befitting a first round draft pick. I am predicting a bust of Taco proportions here. Just one of the worst pics in Cowboys history. And now with the possibility of Overshown being gone for the season a disastrous 2023 draft. We cannot get to the next level with misses like these and that has been the history in Dallas.
Go watch the college tape like I did. He’s trash.

The jump to professional is quite a bit more demanding and expanding talents, skills, and technique requires time to speed up penetration...but this is the rest of that positional thoughts:

DT Neville Gallimore

The former third-round pick has had a good camp but hasn’t shown much during his career. In fact, he was a healthy scratch in the team’s divisional-round loss to the 49ers, speaking loudly. The former Sooner has talent, but Dan Quinn has yet to unlock it to a strong degree, so he could be out as the club has a ton of depth but no stars on the defensive interior at the moment.

DT Quinton Bohanna

Bohanna wasn’t a premium pick like Gallimore and when selected, Cowboys Nation was so starved for interior presence he was anointed. But he’s played like most sixth-round picks; just okay. His lack of development led the club to acquire Johnathan Hankins midseason and he immediately did what Bohanna couldn’t and shore up the run defense. Now with the drafting of Mazi Smith in the first round, Bohanna will likely be squeezed from the 53-man roster.

Right now he's a very mobile trash can full of dirt, which is his assigned mission!

I didn't love the Mazi pick. I felt he was a possible trade back target, like move back 6-8 spots and pick up an extra 3rd type of deal (if the guys we liked at 26 were off the board).
I watch a lot of college football, and am a Michigan fan, so I did see his potential.
Something that spoke big to me was the playoff game with TCU. Mazi did have a forced fumble, but otherwise was pretty invisible. He was up against Steve Avila much of the game and Avila handled him on most plays.
I rememeber one play in particular where it was Avila V Mazi one on one on a pass play, and Avila had him pushed 3 yards past the LOS and was just digging in and kept playing, while Mazi had given up, so his motor was a question to me.
So while I did see his potential, I just didn't think he justified a 1st round pick.

All that being said, I was happy to see the organization sort of wake up and admit that IDL was a weakness and needed to be addressed. It seemed like they largely ignored the glaring weakness there for a long time.

Mazi is a piece of the puzzle. Very unlikely he is an Aaron Donald type who dominates, but he will provide a huge, strong body and help a lot. Having Hankins and Mazi is a great situation IMO. Hankins will start, and Mazi's snaps will likely increase as the season progresses and he gets his footing. This will help preserve Hankins too. As the season wears on, we will be much better at the position than we have been in the past. These types of players don't make a lot of plays, they free up others to make plays. Mazi will be a piece of the puzzle and help deepen the defense, and he does have that potential with his strength and quickness. Judging him now as a pick is foolish IMO.
