Does anyone have some scouting reports on Marion Barber from the 2005 Draft? I'm curious to see what his strengths and weaknesses were, what people said about him, and why exactly he wasn't drafted until the 4th round.

Thanks!

40 time of something like 4.67 is what knocked him down I'm sure.

If I remember straight he did not have a good 40 time and Sporting News advised reported that he should stay in school. Of course this is the same publication that said Doug Free will never be more than a 3rd stringer.

Lindy's draft analysis:

4 (109) Marion Barber III, RB, Minnesota
Shared duties but can handle full load...Can get outside and makes nice cuts...Some scouts believe he needed another year in college...Keeps going when hit, even though he isn't particularly powerful

Sporting news draft guide:

10. Marion Barber, Minnesota*
5-11 210 4.50 3rd round

NFL Comparison: Travis Henry

Strengths: Has adequate size and good lower-body strength. Shows good burst around the corner and adequate speed in the open field. Changes direction quickly and can be elusive. Is a reliable receiver and big-play threat. Is an experience punt and kick returner.

Weaknesses: Must become patient and let blocks develop. Is somewhat inconsistent and runs too high at times. Doesn't run sharp pass routes. Has durability concerns; was a medical redshirt in 2002 because of hamstring injury. Would benefit from another college season.

Bottom line: Barber is rushing things by entering the draft, but he has the talent to ab an NFL contributer. he will need time to improve his technique and patience as a runner. But with his upside, he could be a sleeper as a late day 1 selection. Final Grade: 6.2

Rankings.

1. Cedric Benson 8.8
2. Ronnie Brown 8.7
3.Carnell Williams 8.6
4. Ciatrick Fason 8.1
5. Vernand Morency 7.9
6. Eric Shelton 7.1
7. T.A. McClendon 7.0
8. Walter Reyes 6.6
9. Anthony Davis 6.5
10. Marion Barber 6.2

If his speed was better then average he might be the best running back this side of Tomlinson.

Barber was the only mid/late round selection I've ever been excited about that amounted to anything.

Isn't particularly powerful? There's some good scouting for you.

Not sure, but it should state somewhere to just "get the he77 out of his way"!

Here is how I see it. We got lucky finding a player with "The eye of the Tiger".

Rankings.

1. Cedric Benson 8.8 - total bust, was rated #1 bust potential after the draft
2. Ronnie Brown 8.7- Good player
3.Carnell Williams 8.6 - injury bust
4. Ciatrick Fason 8.1 - doesn't deserve an 8.1
5. Vernand Morency 7.9 - wash out
6. Eric Shelton 7.1 - who?
7. T.A. McClendon 7.0 - who II ?
8. Walter Reyes 6.6 - who III ?
9. Anthony Davis 6.5 - who IV ?
10. Marion Barber 6.2 - #1 RB drafted based on production in this class

This is why you can't over analyze the draft, 15 players taken in the first round this year will be nobodies in 2010/11.

like the Safety from Seattle, or the defense of the cardinals, or Archuletta...

should I keep going and just name every team he has run against?

MY district manager is a big sports fan, and def not a cowboys fan and he said "You can't help but love the guy, he makes tackling look painful when it's usually the other way around"

That whole list is rather sad, except MBIII.

The Auburn boys have done pretty well, Especially Ronnie man we hit it with Marion.

Everyone knew Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown were injury prone before the draft. They both have shown potential at times but Cadillac appears to be done. In all fairness though Ronnie Brown was on a tear last year before getting hurt. I never understood why Barber was rated lower than a lot of the other running backs from this draft. I watched a lot of him and Maroney in college and always was impressed.
