Aussie gives beverage lowdown

Being a Virginia Tech football fan, you can understand if college football is dead to me right now. But we do have a few tailgating traditions, and a recent one is enjoying a Budweiser and Foster’s before each game—because Tech’s defensive coordinator is named Bud Foster.

When I was in Dallas I had to ask Cowboys punter Mat McBriar, who is Australian, about Foster’s. I had heard Aussies were not fond of it.

“What is Foster’s thought of in Australia?” I asked him. “Is it like Budweiser, or less?”

“I’d say less,” McBriar said. “It’s pretty terrible. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a case of Foster’s in Australia.”

“Really? Because it’s not that bad here.”

“I think the Foster’s here tastes better than the Foster’s in Australia,” McBriar said. “It’s brewed in Canada and it tastes different. Here, it’s not so bad.”

“So what do you drink in Australia?”

“Back home, it depends on the state you grew up in. I’m a Victorian, so I drink Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draft, Melbourne Bitter. If I was from New South Wales, Sydney, I’d drink Toohey’s, and if I was from Queensland, I’d drink Forex. They’re all different. In Western Australia you drink Emu, and in South Australia you drink ...” McBriar pretended to urinate.

I wasn't sure if he was joking or not. Later I checked http://www.australianbeers.com/ and sure enough, there is a beer called “P---.”

It is funny how foreign beers get popular in other countries. For example, I was in Spain and tons of folks were drinking Budweiser -- which, of course, is total crap compared to San Miguel (they have an independent division in Spain that produces a local product similar to but not the same as the one we get here from the Phillipines)

I've heard the same thing about Corona not being popular in Mexico. Which after trying to drink it on numerous occasions I can understand why.

When I was a child in Perth, Western Australia they had a local brew called Swann, I was 11 so I never got to try it.

Too funny! Reminds me of a sign in the bathroom at one of the casino's here in Colorado. The casino is located a few miles past Coors Brewery, whose always advertises about using Rocky Mountain Spring Water. We all call in Rocky Mountain P-- Water. Anyway it says "Please flush Coors needs the water". Always makes me chuckle.

Corona is more popular in southern Mexico...if you ever get a chance, try Indio...it's probably the most popular darker beer up in the northern part.

You sould drink Scotch anyway.

Why? So they can savage it by mixing it with coca cola?

I had a friend visiting one weekend and pulled out a decent bottle of scotch -- nothing terribly upscale, but a nice $50ish Islay.

He poured a thick two fingers, dropped some ice in (which I do believe is the correct way to have scotch), and then proceeded to top it with Mountain Dew. To this day, I have no idea how that MD got in my house.

I like Negra Modelo as a darker one. Bohemia is not bad either.

I far prefer the taste of American Micros though. Once you start with those over the top hoppy beers, you really have a hard time enjoying the lighter stuff.
