McC-ran offenses *have always* included at least one big boy in backfield

Go look it up if you don't believe me, but most will recall McC's appetite in GB for having a Ripkowski or a Kuhn or a Lacy... big boys listed at 240-250 lb.

But there's really no one like that currently seeming to be a competitor for the 53-man. Think they may have been (and may still be) hoping to catch the proverbial lightning in a bottle with Luepke, but even if he was turning heads, he's only 230.

Leads to the question whether they've got their eye on some other teams' larger RBs and FBs that they suspect could be on the bubble.

One interesting radar blip I've discovered is that LAC writers are thinking FB Zander Horvath, in his 2nd year out of Purdue, is quite possibly going to be on the outside looking in to the new Kellen Moore offense. He didn't get a lot of snaps last weekend.

If we're not going to go with Luepke, I'd like to see us go Refrigerator Perry style with Mazi. He just likes to hit people, so it could be fun. Yeah, I know it probably won't happen this year no matter what because he's got a lot to learn at DT, but I just like the thought of that freight train comin' at ya.

Luepke is 6'1" and 236
Horvath is 6'3" and 230

What's your point?

Would love Caleb Huntley. Averaged 4.8 last year. Bigger guy. Liked him in his draft. Only 24.

My point? Re-read header. That's my point.

The rest was just commentary related to the point.

No, Luepke might not be jumbo sized, and neither is Horvath, but the inventory of big backs is what it is. Not a lot of jumbos out there to be looking at.

True and McCallister was 235. The game has changed and indications are that MM has made some changes himself. Perhaps this is one as well as there has been very little emphasis on that type of player the past 4 offseasons and they got rid of a decent one who could also pass protect.

Further we have been using the QB sneak and that seems to be a very successful trend the past couple of years in the NFL. We certainly have the meat up front to see success out selves. Our interior gets diving off the snap in tandem down and it will be an easy couple few yards. More than that and hammering it up the gut is no sure thing anyway you want to do it.

Pollard and particular Vaughn have vision. Those two and Dowdle have the quickness to make people miss in the hole. Dowdle has decent size as 225. If our blocking up front gets push and sustain, they can not only make it work but excel.

This is why FB have gone by the way of the dinosaur. Not much need for them now, teams can use TE or an OL on a jumbo package if they so choose. Rules have made the game more wide open and you get yardage in chunks, forget the 15 play 80 yard drives. Those have become rare and almost impossible to be perfect that long.

You can wear a defense down by pounding them with a bigger back, or you can wear a defense out by gashing them and having them try to cover the speedy back in the passing game.
People worry about having only the change of pace back as they call it, but when the pace is Mach 1 you put a lot of pressure on the defense.
Trying to defend Pollard and Deuce whether rushing or receiving all game long will be no easy task, one mistake and it's points on the board for Dallas.

FYI Pollard had more yards after contact then Zeke

Cowboys have TEs to do the FB type dirty work. Seems a bit overblown to be concerned about a big back. How about a few good RBs? There's more than one way to peel a potato.
Beat me to it… if they need that in the backfield, they’ll use a TE.

Mike McCarthy's offenses always got away with holding for years until they were finallystopped. Then he was fired in 2 years.
RBs were irrelevant

LOL , thats what mike wants the offense to do this season, long time consuming drives, short passes, run the ball.

Hunter will need the show the coaches not only can he block well, but catch and run with the ball. Things he did do in college well, but the TE room is stacked, and we know there are some flex players there that can be a H-back for a handful of snaps. It's just a position that was wiped out as more teams went to the 11 Formation.

So, I think in the past it's true, but at the same time there's only a handful of good fullbacks. The rest are just sort of warm bodies/special teams players.

Off the top of my head there's Juszczyk, Ricard, Ingold & Ham. Not sure how good Watt is but just know him from name lol.

indications
What "indications" would those be? It's preseason. And the first preseason where McC has had complete and total ownership of the offense, no compromises with the understudy. And and, they did bring Luepke and Fant into the fold, but neither thus far are distinguishing themselves.

What makes you think MM isn't another puppet? Was MM ever allowed to step in and help KM with the offense? It didn't appear that way. I believe KM was forced on MM, and I base this on comments he made last season or the season before when he said he wouldn't step in to help KM with the offense. You're the HC and it is your butt on the line if you don't, so why not step in unless you were told to stay out of it.

The only coach Jerry has hired since 1995 who wasn't a puppet was Parcels, and he only hired Parcels to get Jerry world built. It was a desperate act to try and get the masses to believe he was really interested winning. Jerry never wanted to hire Parcels but he was forced to do it in order to get support for the stadium.

Difference is that McC actually made that player a functional consistent part of what he did for virtually all of his years in Green Bay. Not just a wrinkle to the offense. A standard element in the offense.

Will be interesting to see what unfolds.
