I didn’t say any of them were similar except for Brady, who was in his second year when he took over for Bledsoe and led New England to a championship. I was just pointing out there were five QBs who took over during the season and led their team to a Super Bowl win. To win a championship regardless who the QB is you need a stacked defense. Jim McMahon, Jeff Hostetler, Trent Dilfer, and Brad Johnson didn’t have to do much but manage games because they had great defenses. The 49ers have a great defense. I wouldn’t say it’s to the level of those other teams but it is the number one ranked defense this season.I don't think these cases are similar. Way more parity these days. A stacked team up until 2001 was enough to win a Super Bowl regardless who was Quarterback, that held much stronger back then than now. Nowadays lots of teams are at the same level where previous to that the few standout teams clearly stood out. Warner's 1999 team was an offensive juggernaut and casted a shadow over most of the NFL. '87 Skins was a standout team too. Considered inferior to the 49ers maybe, but the Vikings upset over the Niners opened the door for the skins as the next best bet.
2001 it should've been the Rams because they were far superior, but that was the emergence of Belichick, the defense of New England got way better at the right time, and the tuck rule game... Brady was shut out at halftime and a controversial call got them past the Raiders.
Only one of these I'd say is similar is Nick Foles.
Like fresh meat to the lions. We will destroy him is what Mike really wants to say.
I'd liken it more to our own Cooper Rush situation earlier this year. Coop looked terrific until he didnt. We’re all waiting for Purdy to falter, but so far he hasn’t flinched. Who knows maybe San Francisco struck gold with him. I’m certainly not trying to compare him to Tom Brady, but this is similar to when Brady took over for New England after Drew Bledsoe was injured and led them to a Super Bowl win. It’s happened at least 5 times that I can recall where a QB took over during the season and led their team to a championship. It happened with Jeff Hostetler, Doug Williams, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady and Nick Foles. However, no rookie QB has ever led a team to a Super Bowl.
Cooper Rush never looked “terrific” but he was solid and didn’t make any mistakes until Philly. We weren’t scoring many points with him and didn’t have much of a passing game. We were winning games with our defense. Purdy has been more productive than Rush. He just put up 332 yards and 3 TDs against Seattle. San Francisco is scoring more points with him than we did with Rush.I'd liken it more to our own Cooper Rush situation earlier this year. Coop looked terrific until he didnt.
yeah we were missing our hof LT and our #2 receiver. point being an after thought qb came in his first few games and looked better than anyone thought. also beat the two sb participants. but mostly purdys run with a team that went to the nfccg last year doesn’t bare any resemblance to kurt warner leading a 4-12 team to 13-3Cooper Rush never looked “terrific” but he was solid and didn’t make any mistakes until Philly. Gotta make our kicks tooGonna have to be a full team game. Offense has to score and put pressure on him. Defense has to stop the run and make them one dimensional.
Both easier said than done.
Dallas will have to control McCaffrey and Deebo first. If they're making plays with their feet then Purdy's job is easy. It's not like they're relying on him to be Dan Marino. If we let a 7th round QB beat a DQ defense, whats that say about DQ? the way to beat him is to keep him in the pocket...much like Hurts.
