Could y’all imagine how miserable it’d be being a head coach under Jerry?
Mike knows that without massive help, this team is dead. But to appease Jerry and not rock the boat, Mike tows the company line and says this team is just fine.
I suspect that some Cowboy fans still have not fully grasped the essence of what makes Mike McCarthy aka Big Mac tick.
Big Mac is not a complicated man, he is not a bad man, and he is not a bad NFL coach ... providing his team has the superior QB and superior overall roster talent.
What Big Mac is to his core is the loyalest lapdog a boss/owner could ever want ... as long as Big Mac is getting paid. He is also deeply loyal to those who have assisted him along the way in his NFL journey.
Take for instance Brian Schottenheimer -- is Schotty really worthy of a NFL offensive coordinator position in 2024 after failing so many times before in that role around the league?
Hell no, but Brian's daddy Marty gave Big Mac his first big NFL break when he coached the Chiefs so Big Mac is gonna find a spot for Brian just like when Big Mac named the undeserving Mike Nolan Defensive Coordinator in his first year in Dallas (before Jerry had to step in and stanch the bleeding by hiring Dan Quinn). Remember, Nolan hired Big Mac as his OC when Nolan was the head coach in SF.
Big Mac's players also generally like him or at least do not really dislike him because Big Mac never pushes them very hard, just like he never pushes himself or his staff very hard.
The reality is that Big Mac tows the company line not because he is forced to but rather because he is far more comfortable doing what his paymasters ask of him rather than challenging them -- even if it means his teams have no chance of wining a Super Bowl. It is who Big Mac is.
And do not expect a negative word from Big Mac about the Cowboys' organization or its owner once the inevitable occurs either after the 17th game of this season or perhaps even before then. Why would Big Mac speak negatively about those who paid him all that $$ to win a single playoff game?
I fully expect Big Mac to depart Dallas without any controversy, without any appearances in NFC Championship games, and without making any significant impact on the organization. But he will leave with $25M more in his pocket than when he arrived.
And that will be just fine with Big Mac.
