McCoy throwing 40-50 balls a day, hopes to be ready to fully participate at combine
By Stephen Hawkins (CP) – 12 hours ago

FORT WORTH, Texas — Colt McCoy is throwing 40-50 balls a day in an intense rehabilitation program for the injury that knocked him out of the national championship game and hopes to fully participate in the NFL draft combine.

The former Texas quarterback said Monday that the nerve injury in his right shoulder is "really coming along" and is close to being 100 per cent.

"Hopefully I'll be able to throw in the combine. That's my goal, I love to compete, I want to go out and compete with those guys, go out there and throw and be myself," McCoy said. "But obviously if the doctors don't let me, I'm not going to be able to do that."

McCoy has remained mostly in California doing rehab since getting hurt in the BCS title game Jan. 7. He returned to Texas to be recognized Monday night with the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback, and plans to return to the West Coast after speaking at an FCA banquet Thursday night in Austin.

On the Longhorns' fifth offensive play against Alabama last month, McCoy took a hard tackle that pinched a nerve and caused his throwing arm to go numb. He didn't return in Texas' 37-21 loss.

"The injury and I think the way that my college career ended has kind of sparked a fire inside of me as far as I'm going to show that I'm going to be ready to go. I'm going to show them that I'm the best, I'm going to show that I'm confident," he said. "I can't wait to step out on the field again, forget the taste that's in my mouth for the last time I played a game. That's what's driving me every day."

McCoy, whose rehab is being overseen by noted sports doctor James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala., said if his doctors determine he can't throw at the combine that begins next week, he will still do everything else possible in Indianapolis. He also plans to participate in the Longhorns' pro day March 31.

There is nothing structurally wrong with his throwing shoulder and McCoy is going through the process of restrengthening his arm.

"My arm feels really good. I'm able to do everything they ask me to do," he said. "It's really healing quickly."

While his 45 career wins at Texas are an NCAA record, McCoy fell short of his ultimate goal of winning a national championship.

"It's one of those things that you'll think about forever. ... Disappointing is probably the real word," McCoy said. "But at the same time, I've been raised the right way and you've got to find a positive in every situation. I think about that and I think about how I still have a lot of football left to play. I'm confident that my best football is ahead of me and that's what keeps me going."

The O'Brien winner last year was Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, who missed all but three games of his junior season because of a shoulder injury sustained in the season opener last September. Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner and a close friend of McCoy's, is also entering the NFL draft and has Andrews as his doctor. Bradford is working out in Florida.

"He definitely boosted me up a little bit, talked to me and said, 'Hey, it's one of the most frustrating things in the world. You're strong and you'll get over it,"' McCoy said. "It kind of stinks that both of us had to go through something like that in the same year. We both try to look for the positive things, and both hope the best for each other."

Can you say red flag? If this is a big deal and he is still suffering after effects this long after the game he is in trouble.

Robbie Bosco Part II?

I like McCoy and he wants to play for the cowboys last i heard, but I am just alittle leary of him, he is injury prone to some detail when big huge games come up.

However if he slides say down to 4th round, or 5th due to his injury, then i might take a flier on him. Then between McGee and McCoy you have 2 decent qbs that one of them should develop and then you can trade one of them for value later after they develop. You have to remember, Romo is 30 this year, so he really has what anywhere from 4 to 7 good years left.

Some QBs tail off after they hit 33 or 34, or some at 37 or 38.

I believe like the packers did, you should draft qbs and develop them, then trade them for value like the packers have done for years.

Well it's a nerve injury, there's not much you can do about recovering from a nerve injury and they just heal when they heal.

I'm a big Longhorns fan but even before the injury I had doubts about McCoy in the NFL. I like the kid allot but just not sold on him leaving a spread offense that he ran at Texas and making the move to the pro ranks. I have the same doubts about Tebow and somewhat with Bradford. Between the 3 I think Bradford has the best chance.

That is not true. He got injured as a freshman when facing Kansas St. That was not a huge game. And even though the A&M game the following week is a big rivalry game it was not a huge game in the sense that A&M was not a top 10 opponent.

I think he has shoulder issues. Seems that no matter how hard he works he seems to find a way to hurt his shoulder. The stage setting has nothing to do with it. It is just his shoulder.

I think that there is concern and rightfully so. Having said that, I don't see him as Prone to injury on his shoulder in the Pros as I do in College. He runs a much more physical style of offense at Texas then he ever would in the Pros IMO. In the Pro's, he will learn to slide and won't be going head first running an Option style offense. He will protect himself a bit more because in the Pro's, that is what you do with QBs. Now, this is not to say that he won't be hit or that he won't get hurt. That happens to healthy QBs in the Pros. but I think it's less likely that he gets that shoulder hurt in the Pros. JMO.

I will say this, I think that Texas knew his shoulder was not right because they did not run nearly as much with Colt as they had in previous seasons with him. Colt puts such a tremendous amount of pressure on a defense when he runs the ball. He is much harder to defend when he forces the defense to account for his running skills. He really didn't do very much of this in his Sr. season and I suspect that this is why. The Coaching staff knew of this injury and didn't want to take the risk. In the National Championship Game, they called multiple QB runs right off the bat and he was injured. I thought that was interesting because they really hadn't done much of that all seasons.

True, he hurt the shoulder vs K. st on a goal line QB sneak and then re-injured it a couple of week’s later vs Texas A&M. I don't know if this is a chronic problem considering the 1st injury was 3 years removed from this latest injury.

I thought he also had some minor shoulder pains his sophomore year as well. Not to the extent of the burner his freshman year or the total numbness of this last injury, but he dealt with some soreness during that second year.

I don't recall that, then again I'm getting old. :laugh2:

I think health wise Colt will be fine just not sure if he has the skills to be a top QB on the NFL level. I hope he does and has a great career in the NFL as I said I like him allot but the football side of me thinks he was a great college player but will struggle at the next level.

My thoughts exactly -- I was never confident about McCoy's chances in the NFL and I'm a longtime Texas fan (class of '77). Same for Tebow.

I think Bradford will probably have the best shot at a long pro career. I hope Colt proves me wrong, but I just don't see it, and not just because of the shoulder injury.

This is a pretty weak draft class for QBs. There isn't anyone whose coming out this year who really impresses me all that much, for one reason or another.

i think as long as he can read the defence in the pros he should be fine, nobody that accurate and athletic should struggle too much in the pros
