For those of you spouting the conspiracy theories on why Ryan wasnt signed and announced yesterday, this was in the Philadelphia Daily News today:

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagles/McDermott_out_as_Reid_changes_his_mind.html

A team source said the decision to fire defensive coordinator Sean McDermott was made Wednesday, but the team decided to keep it quiet as McDermott began searching for other positions.

There's also a a column in one of their papers today that says Ryan is not a candidate there. I will post it once I find it again.

Why would they want to fire this guy. He only got 2 seasons and they made the POs both times. I didn't think the Philly D was that bad. Have they been drafting for D these last two years and not getting the most out of their players? What gives...

He's a huge step down from Johnson, and probably wasn't ready for the job (too young). And yes, they have been drafting defense. They spent their first 5 draft picks this last April, and 4 of their top 6 in 2008. In his, uh, defense, they have had injuries. Regardless, the defensive performance is a big drop off from the Johnson days.

Apparently he might get the DC job in Denver or Carolina.

shefter said the eagles are going to talk to jim mora.

Oh please hire him, mora is awful.

Shefter and Mort just reported that the task of replacing a legend was too much for McDermott, hence his release.

Co-signed.

FYI.

Mort just confirmed the eagles did discuss rob ryan but he is set to go here.

So they are considering Jauron, billy davis and jim mora.

Living hear, I am sure Reid did not want to let him go but the front office wanted a change. The same thing happened with McNabb last year. Reid wanted to keep him and front office forced his hand.

edit: I am so glad Denver hired Jon Fox because he mght have joined the Eagles to help turn around their defense.

Jim Johnson RIP is the biggest loss for that defense. But they have yet to replace their emotional leader in Brian Dawkins. That's just as big IMO as losing Jim Johnson.

Amen, brother.

Not as a defensive coordinator, he isn't.. They wouldn't blitz as much, but they'd be a pretty good bunch.

This.

McDermott had some unrealistic expectations. He was talked about as being "just as good if not better" than Jim Johnson. He's one of those guys in the caliber as Buddy Ryan and Dick LeBeau as defensive masterminds that you just can not replace.

Agreed. That was a mistake. They should have tried to keep him around at least one more year.

I believe that the loss of Dawkins was significant. Nobody on the Eagles' D stepped up to give them an identity. Chemistry is as important as talent when you have a team sport.

Philly was ranked 12th in yards allowed in both 2009 and 2010. That doesn't tell the whole story of course. They were ranked 19th in points allowed in 2009 and 21st in points allowed in 2010. I can't find the final Aikman efficiency ratings, but they were ranked 27th after week 15 this year.

I agree that they haven't replaced what Dawkins brought to that defense. They also have some other decencies on the defensive side of the ball. McDermott was not the only problem. They just weren't getting it done.
