McGinn: Anonymous Scouts On Surtain, Farley and Horn

None of these guys screams I am a lock at 10. Give me Slater.

Funny that these reviews would give you pause with any CB at 10 but then are all in on Slater despite the fact you can find similar reviews on him. I saw one report that had a scout claim he's a 2nd rounder in their eyes.

You can shape a narrative any way you want by cherry-picking which 3-4 quotes you want to put in your article.
Assume there are 200-300 scouts out there and 32 heads of NFL scouting depts.

Be careful what scouts say before the draft, especially the ones who give different reviews than the pack. They could be trying to sway teams away from a guy so he drops. Not saying that's the case with these players but if these 3 are not the top corners in this draft, then I'd like to know who is.

At the same time this draft worries me a lot. I don't think 2020 was a good year to evaluate college players. We really needed to see Farley play in 2020, along with a lot of other players. I am not criticizing them for opting out but it would have been nice to see them play before having to make a decision to draft them at #10.

This is why I am wondering if trading draft picks for actual NFL players might not be a better strategy in some cases.

Teams that do a better job scouting and have relationships with college coaching staffs will be even more ahead of the game on these guys. So Cowboys should be able to take advantage.

To me these type of things should never shape narrative. With anonymous scout takes, I always look to see what the dissenting opinion may be

At 10 I’d take surtain first then Farley
Surtain is a day one player
Farley has huge upside
Horn is a good option if you trade down a few spots
But trading down and wanting horn only works if one of the other two are on the board when you trade

I’ll never get this fascination of people with overrated CBS

you trade down not for Horn but for Collins, Barmore or Moehrig

that’s what I would do but a lot depends on what we do in FA (if anything)

“I have him bottom of the second round,” said a second scout. “He’s my No. 6 corner

He’s not a top pick,” a third scout said. “He’s big and fast, but he’s a press guy only. When he’s off, he’s rigid and stiff. Run support is average for a guy that big. He’s a Seattle-type guy. I’m just not crazy about his overall talent.”
Idiots.

CB’s have a huge impact on games

Pretty good assessment here. I think there's less risk with Farley than you do but pretty much aligned to the rest.
I think Farley is more ready than many realize, his risk more comes from his injury history.

Crazy as I get older all the players who I grew up watching are gonna have kids in the league. No matter what, you can't teach pedigree..

Trade back, get more picks.

With Prescott get a HUGE chunk of the salary cap, this team is going to have to lean on MORE players making ROOKIE deals. Hence, I agree in trading back to get more picks. The draft is a crap shoot and needs as many rookie players to make this team to use less of the cap space in future seasons.

I know the feeling. I used to be a well known roster editor for the NCAA football games. When I would look at their ages and seeing these kids born in the late 90s, 2000s it’s wild.

Lol takes 1 report for you to be out? You dudes on here are hilarious how yall listen to these tv experts and unnamed sources.
Actually, I've previously said I was skeptical of him because of his injury, his level of competition and he sat out a year.

I'm not 100 percent sold on Surtain either. But I think he has a stability that Marlon Humphreys and Peyton and Eli Manning have/had because he was born into an NFL family and learned how to be a pro at an early age.

And it showed in college.

He just carries himself like a winner and, honestly, I think he's going to have a longer, better career than Farley.
