We need at least 3-4 gone before our pick.
But I can see all the teams ahead of us waiting until the 2nd round to take a shot at a QB.
The QB flap right now is what is hurting our position in the first round. If only one goes before Dallas' selection, we are going to have to take a lesser player and sacrifice value if we go for the needs defensively.
That is what is making this draft very hard to get a feel for--it is very difficult to see what teams are going to do because they are all doing the same thing. All of them, Houston (Fitzpatrick), Minnesota (Cassel), Oakland (Schaub), Tampa Bay (McCown) and Jacksonville (Henne) signed a backup to be their placeholder. But what does that suggest? Taking a developmental later on? It usually is not something you do when you plan on spending a top ten choice on a QB. Usually that QB is going to play right away.
I do anticipate a run on QBs at the bottom of the round as the teams that passed early will try to get back into the first to get that 5th year option, which is crucial for a developmental QB. That is why I do not expect any of the top QBs to drop out of the first and expect ones like Garappolo, Savage and possibly even Mettenberger to in the mix to be taken at the end of the round.
The way things look right now, I would love a trade down similar to what happened last year with the 49ers. Trade way down and see if there is the possibility of trading again, loading up multiple choices in the second or third and maybe pick up a first in 2015.
The second and third is where we can draft what we need. We need bodies everywhere. The difference between taking a Jernigan too high or worse a Kony Ealy versus a Kareem Martin, Attaochu, Crichton or Sutton is fairly minimal.
