yet other schools where a single tutor or academic assistant was found to be doing their work and they forfeited games or even lost scholarships.

The idea that the NCAA could not do anything because the BOGUS classes were open to all students is beyond disgusting.
They were BOGUS classes. THAT should be the PROBLEM.

Would give you more likes if I could

I don't really have a problem with a punishment but lets be honest here, the Athletic Department did not create this. They didn't push it and when they brought up concerns, they were told that it was an academic decision. I mean, if you want to point fingers at this, then point them in the right direction. This is not the fault of the Coaches. This was done by Department of African and Afro-American Studies and backed by the University. I mean, I do think there should be penalties but I don't think it should be laid at the feet of the Athletic Departments.

BS. They had to know those course were at LEAST questionable. Never fails to amaze me how some can always find an excuse.

If it makes some of you happier, they lost out on a ton of top recruits because this drug out so many years.:muttley:

But yes, the African American studies classes started out one way--kind a norm fluff college major--and a rogue TA took some of the classes in an entirely different direction. And it went on for years. Not all of the classes in that major were so easy, but certainly some.

Just a reminder....meanwhile, pretty much every athletic program in the nation has about two dozen made for jocks classes that everyone knows are "show up and pass" type things. Usually majors like "communications" or PE or maybe some form of humanities that leaves it wide open to the profs to pass anyone.
I recall Manziel repeatedly saying how he didn't even need to go to class. I have buddies that went to Texas (a strong academic school) and they had a ton of show and pass classes.
But this stuff at UNC was pretty sad. INEXCUSABLE
And very embarrassing for a school that is always listed in the top 4-6 public universities in the nation academically for about 30-40 years straight.
This is a program that until about 10 years ago, the basketball program never had a player not come back to graduate, even when they left early. Jordan, Worthy, etc...worth so many million but still attended summer school to get that degree.
They take HUGE pride in academics there. This is a stain.
It was pathetic and they were guilty
Alumni are/were very pissed.

Not sure why the OP hates them so much, but the hate is real. I have a lot of family members that attended ECU too...and they hate UNC more than anything I can imagine. It's comical. I always assumed it was jealousy (due to ECU's lack of sports or academic national recognition...and lack of relative funding vs UNC) , but it runs deeper than that. One even chose ECU med school over UNCs because he hated UNC so bad. lol
it's almost unhealthy.

It's a crazy state as far as that goes. Silly really...but all in good fun.
NC State and ECU hate Carolina with a passion
probably wake forest hates them too...
Carolina hates Duke and kind of looks down their nose at others (which is probably a source of the hate)
nobody really hates Wake.
Duke is a rival with Carolina, but most fo the student body is from the northeast so it's not really a deep hate.
ECU and NC State have had a bit of it going on over the years...but ECU is not really a nationally except occasionally in baseball (which nobody cares about) and once a decade in football.

Have to be good to be hated normally

it's funny stuff.
Texas has some of that going on too. In fact, you can even throw in the Oklahoma schools.
OU, OSU, Texas Tech, Texas AM, Baylor, TCU, etc...they all hate on UT.

Unfortunately the NCAA has very little regard for academics. College football is all about the money.

Ive had some interactions with NCAA football over the years. While I have a lot of time for many of those involved including coaches, volunteers and players, the caliber of some involved at AD and conference level has always surprised me. Wouldnt know the meaning of the word ethics if it slapped them in the face.

The NCAA is not a stand alone organization. It's basically funded by the schools that participate in NCAA athletics. And the schools that have the largest endowments and emphasize their sports programs tend to put the most money into the NCAA and basically get to call the shots.

Gee, where does this sound familiar.

That's how this disgrace is given merely a slap on the wrist or how Penn State, which had a coach and the school have knowledge of a retired coach raping boys basically gets a slap on the wrist after a somewhat initially tough punishment. And that's why a team like SMU which paid players got the death penalty.

In the end, it only leads to more rampant awful stuff. The paying of players doesn't bother me as much as I think they should be paid. But schools creating fake classes with fake grades or giving recruits prostitutes or allowing for a child rapist to continue to rape children will just continue...except it will only get worse. And as bad as the Penn State situation was, I really shudder to think what worse could be.

The focus is always on academic fraud and players being financially rewarded. This is the tip of the iceberg. There is a big kick back culture in athletic departments. I'd say the parent institutions have no idea what's going on - a Board made up of sheltered a academics wouldnt even know what to look for.

If I were investigating NCAA teams I'd start with the following:

1. Scheduling. Are AD staff getting kick backs for agreeing to play certain non-conference games?

2. Are AD staff getting kick backs or benefits from commercial contracts.

3. Are AD staff involved in the secondary ticket market for sell out games.

Remember that AD staff who receive a lot of cash kick backs have an under the table unseen by the college cash war chest to fund player benefits (as well as enriching themselves).
