Mediocrity is the Brand

Back in the day many of us can remember and cherish when the playoffs were when the Cowboys season begins, now it seems like an 8-8 season is the goal...............my, how the mighty have fallen......due mostly in part of an arrogant self centered, egotistical owner.

On the night Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys, he very famously stumbled through his first presser proclaiming, “We must win; we will win; Winning is the name of the game.” Jerry eventually had those words emblazoned in the entrance to the team’s headquarters in Frisco.

It would be great if the owner actually believed those words and backed it up with some action reflected in the team’s on-field performance. Because his actions actually say, “We must be mediocre, we will be mediocre. Mediocrity is the name of the game.”

This organization was once the gold standard of excellence. The Cowboys played in 8 of the first 30 SBs, winning 5. They have played in zero of the last 22. That’s actually less than mediocre.

The team that earned the “America’s Team” moniker did it by dominating much of 3 decades of pro football. The last two decades have made this team’s brand go from excellence to mediocrity. And to further kick sand in the faces of his fan base, Jerry has no shame in what he’s done to the brand of this franchise. I guess thats what making billions in cash will do to a man who has a mediocre product but continues to translate that mediocrity into cold, hard billions.

How deep is mediocrity ingrained in this organization? Let us count the ways-
  1. Overall regular season record since the 1995 season, the last we won or appeared in a SB is.........176-170. That’s 22 seasons and 7 games this season of consistent mediocrity. It is flat out amazing how consistent the mediocrity is.
  2. Playoff record since the last SB: 3-9. Pitiful, but what’s even more amazing is THAT MAKES THE OVERALL RECORD OF THIS TEAM SINCE OUR LAST SB, 179-179!!!
  3. That consistent record of mediocrity has been done with an array of head coaches and philosophies. This 22 season mediocre stretch was done with 6 different head coaches.
  4. In his beloved “stayjum”, going into the 2018 season Jerry’s boys were 39-36 in the opulent palace he built. With the 3 home wins this year, the Cowboys are 42-36.
I could go on, but the point is made. In the last 22 years and some change, this team under Jerral Wayne Jones is a combined 179-179. “Mediocrity is the name of the game” to Jerry Jones. It’s now the team’s brand.

So if you ask me how this team will finish this year, it seems like a logical conclusion to assume it will be 8-8. Until our owner gets sick of this mediocrity, its simply our brand.

Forbes #1 baby!

lets go back 10yrs it can be worse we are 6th best out of 32 thats not middle of the road, at 92-68 I believe its gotten better we cant simply keep going back so long ago..i like 5 yrs but at least this 10yrs shows improvement..am I happy with the layoff appearances and no SBs heck no but stop trying to put us in the bad team category.. look at a lot of those teams over the past 10yrs starting to win now its going to take them a very long time just to get to .500 overall record..seriously.. these posts while have some validity make me SMH..

You’re talking about regular season record and I’m talking about playoff success. I don’t give a damn about the regular season record if it doesn’t result in post season success.

I am afraid that the Cowboys are far below mediocrity when it comes to their former strength, activity in the playoffs.

Over a 22 year period the average NFL team will reach the divisional round of the playoffs 5.5 times. They will get to the Conference championship game 2.75 times and make 1.33 appearences in a Super Bowl.

Within the past 22 seasons the Cowboys have made 4 divisional playoff games, 0 conference championship games and 0 Super Bowls. As far as the playoffs are concerned the following two statements illustrate the tragedy behind Jerry's tenure as GM without the contributions of Jimmy Johnson:

1. The Cowboys have been far below average.

2. Even if the Cowboys were to reach the Super Bowl this season, it would merely satisfy the Law of Averages for that particular aspect of the playoffs.

happens to a lot of teams over a long period, Washington record right before we played was also .500 over that period..lets stop just looking at US and blaming Jerry..Parody is now built into the league and other than maybe a few franchises have overcome that but many sit so close to .500 year in and year out or win 12 one year 6 the next..tons of teams make the payoffs one year out the next, SB hangover see Philly..heck it took them their entire existence to win ONE SB..ill take Jerrys 3 and the old regimes 2 plus many appearances and winning records over many..Jerry doesnt do this on purpose maybe areal GM and some better coaches and we improve some but look around the league..Parody and mediocrity is at a all time high..

:lmao::facepalm:
Can't make this stuff up

look first off I SAID stop going back to ridiculous ERAs 20 plus years.. the last decade has shown improvement we are a top 6 team in RS record..you have to start there, thats not bad out of 32 teams..I said I understand the frustration but there are very obvious reasons we didnt go further and if you watched the games in the playoffs it wasn't Jerry dropping balls or short stopping routes, Crayton, fumbling FG holds with an oiled up ball, Romo but lets not forget the play before which ill argue until im more red then witten that that was 1st down at the goal line, another REf rip off, did Jerry make Murray fumble, Baily miss two FGs and Dez gets rip off by refs, or did he come up a minute short on D to beat GB??? we've had more of our fair share of just bad luck or inopportune bounces or calls that really we had some great teams that should have went further..

yes it suks we havent been better in the playoffs but acting as if we havent been relative at all and just medicore isn't true if you use 10yrs or 5 yrs as the proof its gotten better.. Yes its time to get rid of Garett, I said that after 2015 and still on board with that, I wish JJ would get a real GM but truly we know Mclay and SJ has been doing this the last 5 plus years and again its gotten better..

Definitely its time for an all new modern coaching staff and schemes to fit the new age players..we are overdue for this and that we can blame Jerry for..for sure..im sick of this staff done

Wow I thought I'd heard a lot of stupid statements but you get the moronic award. If you don't like how he's managing the team, you are well within your rights to criticize but that statement should cause you to be banned. Maybe you should start cheering for another team.

No success until Jerry and Stephen are worn food

Great post as usual Bob

That only highlights how absolutely GREAT this organization was the first 4 decades of its existence. The last two decades have put a major dent in what was once a brand of excellence.
AGIAN the last 10yrs a realistic time frame to show improvement we are 6th in the league for regular season W-L record.. 63-50 not counting his season, not great but well above .500..again im not happy with the carott and the lack of deep playoff runs but we are NOT in the same calss as the true medicore teams..average sure not spectacular I know but the way these threads and this site makes it seem we are Cleveland and we are so far from that its ridiculous..im not satisfied or content but ill still defend the STAR..someone needs too

There is a difference between defending our favorite team and defending their mediocre performance. The first is called loyalty to your team. The second is called reality.

Maybe Jerry's definition of "winning" is different than yours.

1989: Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys for $140 million

2018: The Dallas Cowboys are valued at $4.8 BILLION, the highest value of any sports franchise in the WORLD. More than Manchester United, Real Madrid, the Yankees, the Lakers, the Patriots.... anybody.

Looks like he's "winning" to me.

Do I know you? Is this your son @Rockport?

I stand by my post. The Cowboys will NOT win another championship until Jerruh is dead, a ghost, pushing up daisies, **** the bed, tits up, etc...

Since the year 2000 22 different teams have made a conference championship game. The cowboys aren’t 1 of them. The Cowboys as a franchise have been a failure for 20+ years now...there’s really no denying it in any measure. OP is right, the entire way the cowboys are run is toxic. Jerry and Stephen need to go away and count their $ while real football guys running the team. Jerry has become the new Al Davis essentially
At least Al Davis was a badass football mind in his younger days. He just got old and senile. Jerruh was never a football mind. Everyone knows Jimmy won those THREE SBs for him. I still remember him yanking the trophy away from Switzer like a toddler after XXX...
