Melton's snap count

For sure our best interior pass rusher and overall defender, but by my count he played less than 35% of the snaps against the NYG. And not much more than that in prior games. I get keeping him fresh, but what gives?

its great question because if I am going to pay guy $9 million next year he better play more than 20-30 snaps game. Having said that...Dallas has 3 DT playing at high level right now (Melton, Hayden & Crawford). All three have earned playing time and are getting it. I think we are going to see Melton snap count go up as Dallas likely will want to see if he can handle more snaps and justify the large guaranteed money for next year.

IMO new knee, you get it stressed and it will be to the end of the season before it feels normal. Adrian Peterson coming back like he did from the knee surgery is unheard of in this day and age. Look at RGIII and he is a world class track talent and still recovering. I would rather have Melton through the end of the season than satisfying fans appetite for more playing time in each game. I agree though a larger dose of Melton would help this D.

whoever is in there on first down will get a lot of snaps today as they will be in up-tempo, not allowing for a lot of substitutions

I think part of the problem is that your premise is wrong: he's far from being our best overall interior player. Crawford is!

Melton rushed the passer on 19 of his 31 snaps against the Giants. Crawford did so on 29 of his 52 snaps.

So 61% Vs 55% rushing the passer, I would have thought it might be a little higher for Melton.

The defensive staff is greatly experienced in sensing how to go about utilizing their personnel. They have vast experience in determining what the best way may be to handle each individual in terms of the number of reps that would most likely bring out the best in him. I prefer to leave it to their judgment to make those decisions.

Was that all passing downs, or those snap count numbers, how many rushing plays. Remove the runs, and then what are the % numbers.

It was 41% for Melton.

I thought it would be more like 60%. It would have to be a consideration when deciding on picking up his option for next season. I'm not sure that it would make sense to pay him the 9M next season for less than 50% of the snaps.
