Mere formality before the most critical offseason I can remember

Let's just put it on the table. Even if Dallas blindly finds itself in the playoffs given their current predicament, their ouster is a mere formality.

This defense gets skull-shredded by good quarterbacks. Absolutely abused beyond recognition. No team that gets absolutely trashed four times in one season is a playoff threat. Zeke or not, this team is too fatally flawed to beat good competition four weeks in a row.

Yes, 10-6 would be a respectable record, but aside from Kansas City (which fell apart), what good team has this team beaten? I'm not feeling optimistic against Seattle or Philly even with Zeke, but we'll see. Maybe Philly will be sitting starters by then, but likely not with their current QB situation.

So on to 2018.....this team's future hints of greatness and catastrophe at the same time.

My hope is that Will McClay is already firmly entrenched in the offseason game plan. Things have to be different this time. Stephen has to let go of the purse strings. He's going to have to overpay some outside free agents, which he doesn't like to do, in addition to signing Lawrence, Martin, Hitchens, and the restricted Irving.

You only get 3-4 legit draft picks to help you immediately. Anything after that is relatively dumb luck. Free agency has to patch some gaping holes along with some shrewd picks.

This team still primarily needs defense, but it also needs a #1 receiver, a legit young tight end, and a RT so Collins can return to LG (especially with Tyron's health). The offensive line is no longer dominant like before, but can be remedied with one key addition.

Defensively, Dallas needs a run-stopping 1-tech, at least two linebackers, a corner to replace Scandrick, another pass rusher opposite Lawrence, and perhaps a safety.

That's 8-9 players of significant need. That's both a lot, and not all that many, depending what approach you take in the offseason.

Are Zeke's troubles behind him, or is this and every offseason going to be a hold-your-breath coin toss? Is Jaylon's foot beyond mending? Is Witten going to retire? Is Dez willing to take a pay cut? Will the backs of Lawrence and Tyron hold up?

And what if Dak crashes and burns against Seattle and Philly? Eyes have to be firmly on the promising 2nd-year guy to see if he does have the wares to develop into an elite QB, or if his limitations put him in that long list of average dudes that wander the league for a decade? This has to be looked at with wide-open eyes and no bias, which is hard as hell for P.T. Barnum the owner.

If Dak doesn't finish strong, then what if a good QB is there in round 1? What if Garrett is gone? What does the new coach want to do offensively? Can Dak do those things? Can Dez do those things? Is Witten any use anymore? Williams?

Notice how the questions all surround the most important positions and the best known players on the roster.

That is troubling.

This offseason will be a major tipping point for the Dallas Cowboys. If the right decisions are made, this could be a decade-long contender. But if not, this team will be digging out of this hole and looking up at Philadelphia for a long, long time.

Either way, folks, this isn't a Super Bowl contender this year. That much we know. I'll enjoy watching it play out, but I've already read the final chapter.

Assuming Garrett is not fired, I would look to make a change at DC.

Actually use FA to get better. No, don't blow your load on one overpriced guy. Spread it around on smart moves - go get Poe or Logan and fix your DT problem. Sign a guy like Z Brown at LB, if he shakes free. Look for a vet safety. Three moves that improves your defense immediately and allows you to then really go BPA in the draft where you could use help at DT still, LB, S, OL, TE, WR.

I think the only truly signicant needs are WR, LB, and FS. The rest are just areas where we’d like to get more depth or upgrade, but I would not call them significant or immediate needs.

You think the pass protection has been good this year? You think Dez is a #1 receiver? We're throwing for about 130 yards against good defenses. That's a problem.

IF Dallas makes the playoffs they would be the favorites in the NFC

The changes to the secondary, the play of Lee/Hitchens and the pressure from DLaw/Irving have helped the D immensely

Zeke coming back is all the Offense needs

Uh............no.

They would not be favored against Philly, New Orleans, Minnesota, Carolina, Los Angeles, Atlanta, or Green Bay.

-Linebacking corps needs a major overhaul. We need at the minimum two LBers (One needs to be Lee’s replacement).

-We need to end the Byron Jones at Safety experiment. Put him at slot CB to replace Scandrick, and find a true SS in either free agency or the draft

That makes our starting CBs next year:
LCB: Jourdan Lewis
RCB: Chido Awuzie
Slot: Byron
Dime: Anthony Brown
5th Corner: Either Duke Thomas or Marquez White

-Find an above average 1-tech. Tired of getting gashed in the run game.

On offense:

-Try and upgrade the LG spot. Cooper is ok, but i want this line to become dominant once again

-Upgrade Slot CB. Beasleys limitations on deep routes is hurting this offense and QB. Defenses know he mostly runs short routes, which is afffecting Dak

-Get Witten to retire and find a TE that can stretch the field

this team has a lot of issues to deal with coaching is number one and wr is another if they don't change any coaches then every thing will pretty go along as it has they should release witten and dez but they wont

I'm not in the "need" for a WR group, least of our needs imo. DT, LB, TE, G, swing Tackle. Woods will replace Scandrick in the nickle, move Jones back to CB. A QB to legitimately push Dak to continue to improve is a high priority for me as well. Injuries and suspension played a big part in the record this season, so I'm still optimistic about the future.

You overvalue the roster.

We absolutely need help at DT. We could also use another DE, a true speed rushing end. Don't let the success at getting to the QB this year fool you. They could add there.

We could absolutely use a good TE too, as Witten is at the end and Gathers is a complete unknown at this point.

According to who? If they make it as the 6th seed, outside of Dallas, no one would really be calling them the favorites.

Says Mr I'm leaving at Halftime

His position here is not inaccurate. We would most definitely not be the favorites in the NFC. Doesn't mean we couldn't make some noise but we likely would be underdogs in every game we play.

If this team makes the playoffs at all, it’ll be riding a 5 game win streak having gone through two other qualifiers the last two weeks of the season. So I reject the premise. But to play along...they need to resign or retain all their significant players: Lawrence, Hitchens, Irving, Martin. They need to add a veteran inside LB and a veteran 1T with better than garden-variety ability. They need to add a speed WR somewhere in the draft. And they need an OT3 who can actually play some. That could come from free agency if there happens to be one available, or from a supplementary pick. The rest of the draft, including the top two picks, needs to be defense.

I doubt the staff changes at all, but if it does, it’ll be at the position coach level.

We will make an impact signing or two in free agency though. Not necessarily something huge, but an actual defensive personnel upgrade. On the order of an Ansah or so.

No I'm at the game with your tickets you gave away on Craigslist

Gave away? Lol, I made almost $2,500 on the Philly game because I couldn't go. Covered almost half my PSLs that day. I'm not giving anything away.

As a "capologist", you should appreciate that.
