Merge - Carter to QB Jets

ESPN.com news services

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Jets quarterback Chad Pennington will miss two to four weeks with a strained right rotator cuff.

Pennington was hurt in the first quarter of a 22-17 loss to Buffalo on Sunday when he scrambled up the middle for a 12-yard gain. Rather than sliding, he elected to dive ahead and was hit from the right side by linebacker London Fletcher, who forced a fumble.

Pennington continued playing, but his arm started to stiffen and he left the game in the fourth quarter after talking with coach Herman Edwards. The conversation took place after Pennington's last two drives ended with an interception and a 13-yard sack.

Former Cowboys starter Quincy Carter will start Sunday against Baltimore.

"There are a lot of reasons I'm here," said Carter, "but this is one of the biggest ones. I didn't sign [with the Jets] to earn a chance to play this way, and I feel terrible for Chad. But now I've got to step in and lead this team. I've been there before."

The Jets, 6-2 at the halfway point of the season and trailing first-place New England by a game in the AFC East, host Baltimore on Sunday, then go on the road for games at Cleveland (Nov. 21) and Arizona (Nov. 28), before returning home again to play Houston (Dec. 5).

"It's always kind of interesting when they go down," Edwards said Monday. "Quincy came in and did a good job. That's why we brought Quincy here, if something should happen it's good we had foresight. He's here, he's played in a lot of football games, now he has an opportunity to play."

An MRI exam Monday revealed the strain. Pennington started rehabbing immediately to regain the strength in his arm.

For the second straight year, the Jets must play without Pennington, who signed a $64 million extension before the season started. Last year, he broke his left wrist in the preseason and missed the first six games. Without him, the Jets struggled and finished 6-10.

"Compared to what I went through last year, this is something hard to take because I hate missing games and it's something I'm not used to as a starter," Pennington said. "But at the same time my cup's still half full, not half empty and I have a lot of great expectations for our team."

Pennington is the league's No. 8-rated passer with an efficiency mark of 97.4. He has completed 144 of 216 attempts for 1,643 yards, nine touchdown passes and three interceptions.

Carter was cut Aug. 4 in a surprising move amid reports he failed a drug test, and the NFL Players Association has filed a request for arbitration in the case. He has 31 career starts. He completed two of three passes for 66 yards and a touchdown after replacing Pennington on Sunday.

While the addition of Carter at the beginning of the season appeared an ill fit -- some league observers believed he did not have the tools to play in the West Coast offense directed by coordinator Paul Hackett -- the four-year veteran is said to have assimilated the New York attack pretty well in practices. Hackett might make a few minor changes to take advantage of Carter's mobility, which is better than Pennington's.

"[Carter's] come in here and he's meshed in with our team," Pennington said. "He's studying really hard. He's absorbed everything really well. I have full confidence in him."

Pennington's misfortune offers Carter an open audition for teams that might be interested in him after this season. Carter signed a one-year contract with the Jets so that he could go on the open market next spring.

"The important thing now is to keep the team going in a positive direction, to come in and win games," Carter said. "That's the biggest priority."

I wish we tried to trade him and get at least a 4th or a 5th out of it. He was a playoff QB, that has to count for something doesn't it.

I thought so.

It should be interesting to see what happens after this year if he plays well in his short stint.

I believe Carter signed a 2 year deal. I could be wrong. I wonder if the Jets will be able to get anything for him in the offseason.

From what I heard they shopped him around with no takers, also no waiver pickup. Hopefully he has his head on straight and takes advantage of the opportunity.

I know one thing, if Carter comes in and throws about three TDs and leads them to a win there will be plenty of forgotten posters returning to the forum.

Can you imagine JJones' face watching the QC highlights. 3 tds 1 int 240 yds 20-13 victory. Boy, QC has much love right now, much love.

LTN - Can you be a Jets fan and a Cowboys fan!

I'm pulling this kid. I truly believe that the season started tanking the day they cut Quincy to start 41 year old Vinnie the Hero. (he has strong legs)

Looks like Carter stepped in ready to play and the coaches seem confident in him. He's perfect for the Jets. Jets pound the run first. Pass off it second.

Go Quincy!

Nors, this Cowboy team is 8 & 11 in its last 19 games. Obviously that means Carter was 5-6 in his last 11 starts... think about it.

Hopefully a little time holding the clip board has helped him and given him some perspective on the game. He hasn't had a chance to do that since his rookie year.

All he needs to do is play well 3 out of 4 games (if Chad is out that long) and he should wind up on the Dolphins more than likely by next year. Maybe even the Ravens.

He had them 7-2.

We are now 3-5 coming off a 5 turnover performance.
Stop believing the exit polls and count the actual votes as they are coming in!

i hope QC holds down the fort well. i like the guy. how's this for a stat? chad pennington has NEVER turned over the ball in the redzone. wicked huh?

He had them 7-2 against some of the dregs of the the earth and one very lucky Eagles win due to Randall Williams.

And then Quincy went 3-5... Oh wait Nors, isn't that? Yes it is isn't it? Yes, by God it's the same record we have accumulated so far this year!

Well son-of-a-gun!

I knew it was a mistake to get rid of him as he was not the problem for the Cowboys.
Now we are 3-5 heading in to the toughest part of the season. Folks this may get ugly here.
Now is the time to bring in the young blood and get them learing the ropes.
Put Vinny, Eddie and Larry Allen on the bench and let someone who may be worth keeping start getting experience.
The largest part of the reason we are losing is because of most of the off season moves were for older, slower players. Everyone has to realize that sooner or later it is time to give it up and retire. Curly

Well if you look at the Cowboys record since Carter was drafted....

Its pretty pathetic...

Carter left with a winning record.....and wins is all that matters

Hopefully he will have some success for the Jets.....its good to see ex cowboys succeed in other places.

He should have a long career in this league as a very good backup. Not bad for a low second round pick.

It did to me. I was so ticked off about that I can't even tell you.

We just lost to one of the dregs of the NFL and offensively looked horrible. Carter may not have helped much this season, but he wasn't going to hurt us worse than Vinny has this year. And I think Vinny has hurt us. Aside from his interceptions, he just does not make big plays. He has missed many passes that could have gone for TDs. He isn't the only problem, but he is the QB.

Since Aikman left after 2000, the team has won 23 games. Carter was the starter in 16 of those games. No other QB has more than 3 wins. Granted he started more than the other QBs but still, he found ways to win despite his problems.
