Shawne Merriman returned to San Diego on Saturday after seeking a second and third opinion on his knee injury. The linebacker told the Chargers he has a torn lateral collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Shawne Merriman has two torn ligaments in his left knee.
Merriman had seen specialists in New York and Alabama in the past week. He plans to go to Miami next week to see another doctor before deciding whether to play this season or have surgery.
"I'm just trying to get an opinion on what I need to do, how bad the injury is and if I can do anything to play," Merriman told the Union-Tribune. "I'm going to do the best I can to get back on the field and get ready for Carolina."
The Chargers' medical diagnosis is that Merriman can play when the season starts Sept. 7. Coach Norv Turner's talks with Merriman buoyed those hopes.
"Based on my conversation, I'm optimistic," Turner told the newspaper.
The LCL stabilizes the knee on the outside while the PCL keeps the shin bone from sliding too far backward.
Merriman has an NFL-best 39½ sacks since 2005, when he entered the league. He also won defensive rookie of the year honors in 2005.
