Andre Gurode had knee surgery in June, this gave a chance to the younger
players to get more reps in practice. I believe that by Gurode having surgery
this late or close to training camp may have upset the organization (Garrett).
On top of choosing to have the surgery this close to training camp he came to camp over weight. I also believe that the message to players is whatever
procedures needs to be taken care of, needs to happen in a timely manner at the end of the season not close to the beginning of camp.

I think if the braintrust was honest with us, they would agree with you.

Of course Costa playing well has something to do with it too.

Well there doesn't seem to be any punishment for Montrae Holland coming in ridiculously out of shape. It sounds like Hudson Houck is ready to put him back as a starter as soon as he's ready.

Don't fool yourself into thinking this is anything more than a money issue.

And he is younger, cheaper, and is on the right side of 30. ;)

Coming into camp overweight may have had something to do with it but I believe management felt that we needed to get younger on the offensive line and wanted to see how Costa did with another camp under his belt. Costa looks like he can play C in the NFL. I also think this was another cap casualty.

IMO, this also signals that management might be willing to sacrifice this season for next. Clearly the moves on the line tell me we are kind of in rebuilding mode, similar to last season when Philly believed they were in rebuilding mode and found a way into the playoffs. Could Dallas make the playoffs this year? I hope so but I just don't see it.

Going by that, this Gurode stuff seems like nothing more than a money issue.

If Holland does get his starting job back.

I don't know that I believe he will. But you'd be right if he does.

I can promise you one thing. There's a zero percent chance of this happening if Wade Phillips was still the coach.

Agreed. Then again, if Wade was still the coach i'd probably be doing more of this on Sundays...:banghead:

There is probably more to it than one thing. For example, it is widely known that Kosier usually calls the blocking schemes on the line and it may be that the Cowboys know this is the last year they will keep Kosier so they want to get Costa in there so he can learn this year and be ready to take over blocking calls next year if not this year at some point.

It could be that the Cowboys planned to trade/release Gurode all along but could not do it because he was not active yet due to recovering from his surgery. They also had to wait to see how Costa and the rookie guards would perform in games because Gurode might have been their backup plan for the guard position if the left guard position remained a problem.

Gurode has not been a problem and has not made any problems with the Cowboys coaches, owner or the staff or else we would have heard about it extensively.

Most likely this comes down to something very simple .. the Cowboys believe they have the future center capable of starting (Costa) when he returns from injury and they feel that between Holland, Nagy and Arkin, they have the left guard position taken care of. They likely want to keep Gurode one more season though they want to pay him much less than his current contract since he may be a backup or may lose his starting position at some point.

If I was Gurode, I would say no thanks and put the decision on the Cowboys whether to pay him, trade him or release him because you know there are teams out there who would gladly pay him his salary.

This is not Gurode's fault nor is it Jerry's, Garrett's or the Cowboys' fault. It is simply a business decision and I commend Gurode for conducting himself professionally by helping the other centers even though he just found out he was being held out. It says a lot about his character and I wish him well whether he stays with the Cowboys or moves on to another team.

Worthy of quote. It was on BTB.com I believe where they were speculating that Jerry had a trade partner lined up if they could restructure Andre's contract beforehand.

Bottom line is he is not worth 6 million. There are only so many millions to spend on 53 guys. No other team will pay or trade for that either.

Also, this has been in the works for awhile. We would not have gone after Nnamdi if this wasn't part of how to afford it.

I disagree. I think Gurode was our starting center from day 1 until the staff began to see how well Costa was playing.

I could see this happening. Also, I really like what Costa brings. He's tough, young, works his arse off, can get to the second level, and has done a great job already. JG likes this guy alot.. I'm really liking the oline that JG is putting together, very mobile and young..

It will be interesting to see if he can command a big paycheck elsewhere. The Cowboys probably offered him the going rate for an aging, coming-off-surgery, declining-skills center.

No doubt about this, Gurode was the guy until Costa turned their heads.

It's the kind of offensive line you need these days in order to go up against these super athletic defensive linemen and linebackers.

Tyron Smith is the future of offensive lines - guys built like tight ends/3-4 OLBs that can block like offensive linemen.

I'm anxious to see our screens with FJ and DM, they're gonna be very effective. This oline can get downfield, Gurode and Bigg couldn't..

Gurode, Bigg, and Columbo couldn't. 3/5ths of the line. It does make on reflect on what constraints that placed on Garret's play calling, and what the current inexperience might place on same said offensive planning.

Like he's known to say, it's a process.

To me it also seems Garrett has finally convinced Jerry to let go of high priced players that aren't performing. We all know that scenario well but it seeIt me they are trying to put all the dead cap money in one year (next year). If you look at older players in basically their last year of a contract and the younger players they have resigned or extended the future could be in two years from now when cap room will be the sky. All high priced older veterans such as Brady and Newman will be released or just not resigned without too much of a cap hit.

This may not be a rebuilding year but a transitional year where for once our GM is looking to the future not the right now. I give full credit to Garrett for this, his background, history, and family links with the Boys have helped an old codger like Jerry at least try a new way that we all have to admit is completely off the charts for him. If an alien popped out Jerry's arse next week I would not be surprised. For once I can say our GM is letting the coach run the team, true enough he makes the final decision but without Garrett's influence there is no way I believe these moves happen. Kudos Jason Garrett, I'll wait (maybe not patiently), but I'll wait for you to get us number VI.

Has everything to do with it. Everything.
